GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a full-time Senior Heavy Equipment Mechanic located in Gillette, Wyoming. Under limited supervision, the Senior Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs a variety of maintenance and repair tasks with automotive equipment and heavy-duty vehicles, including diesel and gasoline engine overhauls and tune-ups, brakes, steering, transmission, or hydraulic repair.
Gillette is located on the rolling hills midway between Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone National Park, and is one hour from Devil's Tower National Monument. The Powder River Basin, a geological structural basin, produces over one-third of our nation's coal.You'll have easy access to: hunting, fishing, camping, skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, golfing, and other outdoor activities in the Black Hills or Big Horn Mountains. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.
Maintains and repairs trucks, plows, and various pieces of construction equipment.
Evaluate mechanical problems, perform diagnostic tests, interpret the results, and decide the best course of action needed.
Diagnoses and repairs special computerized equipment.
Orders parts and processes payments.
Schedules repairs of equipment.
Runs reports to ensure that preventive maintenance is accomplished on equipment.
Performs journey-level skilled machining and fabrication of hard and soft metal alloys.
Works with other supervisors at the location to ensure equipment is maintained and in good operating condition.
Qualifications
PREFERENCES/AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:
Preference may be given to those who have completed any equipment certification exams, skills in using fleet maintenance software
Required to obtain Welder Certification card.
KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of automotive troubleshooting and diagnostics; automotive shop operations and ability to make decisions regarding the management, maintenance, and repairs of all vehicles.
Aptitude to troubleshoot various mechanical issues with a given piece of equipment; ability to gas and arc weld and cut; ability to use hand and power tools.
Ability to diagnose mechanical problems.
Ability to effectively manage time.
Skill in automotive maintenance and repair, including the use of automotive shop equipment, hand tools, and welding equipment.
Skill inefficient records management and data entry.
Knowledge of policies and safe work procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor's Degree
Experience:
0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Heavy Mechanic
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Ability to obtain a CDL
OR
Education & ExperienceSubstitution:
3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Heavy Mechanic
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Ability to obtain a CDL
Necessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Individuals in this classification must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Individuals must report to the Department Shop within 30 minutes of receiving the call. Acceptance of an appointment to this classification signifies that the individual is aware of this requirement and will comply with it. Failure to be available for emergency work, without an acceptable excuse, will be grounds for immediate disciplinary action and possible dismissal.
Individuals in this classification will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Constant use of manual and powered hand tools.
Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment.
Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods.
Ability to work in adverse environmental conditions.
Ability to work around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
Ability to lift 50 pounds.
NOTES:
FLSA: Non-exempt
Must be able to obtain a Welding Certification Card.
This position includes a $50 per month tool allowance. Must provide own tools.
Occasional overnight travel is required.

Qualifying eligibility and criteria for the hiring bonus
Temporary employees accepting a full-time position.
Current employees accepting a promotional opportunity - recruitment must have been opened to the public.
One year of service to WYDOT must be completed, failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive, funds will be recouped from final pay.
Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date.
Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period.
If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
