This position requires sound technical knowledge and expertise related to the functional area of responsibility. You will need prior experience and/or knowledge of mechanical, instrumentation, electronics, testing/driving and fabrication. Translates business objectives to actionable work for the work group. Supports leading new processes and methods in line with departmental goals.

About the Global Technical Specialist (BFO) - Generator Role

GM is undergoing a major transformation, both in how we operate and in how we will influence the future of transportation. This is an opportunity in a high growth area of emerging Global Regulatory Fuel Economy and CO2 reduction requirements, and novel customer facing applications. Seeking highly motivated candidates that possess creativity and initiative as well as a high level of independent judgement. Selected candidate must have Electric Power and Generator experience or strong desire and transferable skills to work on 12 and 48V Electric Power Systems (includes various types of electric machines, regen systems, power generation, voltage regulation, electric motor drives and Electric Power Management). Candidate will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Lead and set strategic direction of generators and electric power systems for various features and applications across automotive subsystem

  • Serve as global single point contact for generator systems

  • Commonize technical solutions and leverage volumes across subsystems, global organizations and suppliers to reduce cost, mass and complexity; while maintaining the safety goals/coverage of all features being supported by the solution

  • Identify and implement relevant technologies for future GM products to place GM in a leading position for product safety and CO2 reduction

  • Lead innovation and advanced technology development on new generator systems in partnership with suppliers and R&D, focused on cost reduction, mass reduction and fuel economy improvements

  • Collaborate with systems, safety, and OBD teams to specify and balance system requirements through negotiation and balancing of interdisciplinary requirements

  • Develop generator road maps, strategies and global rollout

  • Convert strategic direction into actionable tactical plans through planning, definition and development of deployable innovative 12V Power technology into various automotive subsystems

  • Support development of serial data and controls requirements

  • Document and comprehend all BOM Row imperatives e.g., piece cost, cost drivers, supply base capability, market trends, vendor tooling, volumes-where used, mass, quality, performance, etc.

  • Lead and support cross-SMT DREs with execution of 12V power global strategies and engineering solutions in a technical advisory role

  • Foster communication and close-loop learnings between regions

  • Develop and maintain commodity specific Statement of Requirements (SOR), Component Technical Specifications (CTS) and global Bill of Material documents

  • Establish overall Sourcing Strategy with the Purchasing Buyer and Commodity Manager

  • Lead commodity-specific technical design reviews, sourcing activities, and baseline DFMEAs (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis)

  • Develop upfront strategy for evaluating generator location and integration into engine/electric power subsystems to ensure robust design and execution

  • Support the Electric Power GSSLT for definition of future 12V power topologies

  • Manage commodity-related PRTS issues

  • Collaborate with the Quality team and lead component specific QRD improvement efforts including IPTV tracking, pro-actively driving initiatives to prevent quality issues and reduce warranty costs

  • Travel to relevant supplier engineering and manufacturing locations

  • Create and maintain Interface Control Design (ICD) strategy and ICD templates

  • "Close the Loop" on learnings by updating and maintaining required information (Best Practices, GM Specifications, SOR Template, etc.)

  • Participate in resolution of field issues related to generators, electric motors and actuators, determine root causes and recommend appropriate course of action

  • Understanding of CAE tools, and methods for electromagnetic, thermal and durability analysis and testing of mechatronic systems

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of automotive Electronics and/or 12V Electric Power product development experience

  • Detailed understanding of generators and their application to 12V power system design and integration

  • Good knowledge of product design and development cycles

  • GVDP (Global Vehicle Development Process)
  • Working knowledge of automotive component and system level test plans, including Environmental and EMC testing

  • Understanding of power electronic circuitry and control techniques used for electric machines control (generators electric power regulated output, DC brush/ brushless motors speed and torque control, etc.)

  • High level understanding of hardware and software design and failure modes in electronic modules

  • Experienced in performing system, sub-system, software, and component level DFMEAs

  • Experience in the automotive product release and specification process e.g., E2/ECR, APM, GART, DOORS, RTC, Synergy

Preferred Qualifications

  • MSEE preferred

  • OEM Design Release Engineering experience (DRE or supplier resident experience)

  • High level of competence in writing and comprehending software requirements

  • Experience with GM part number creation and change management.

  • Knowledge of electromagnetic fields and thermal analysis tools

  • Knowledge of electromechanical design principles and system integration

  • Knowledge of design for manufacturability and low-cost manufacturing of electrical devices

  • Ability to read system engineering schematics and understand electronic / electrical functionality

  • Knowledge of vehicle serial data communications (CAN, GMLAN, LIN,) and electrical architectures (Class 2, Common Architecture, Global A, and Global B)

  • Experience in troubleshooting software anomalies using software development tools (including data capture and analysis).

  • Knowledge of microcontroller architectures, memory technologies, and programming

  • Compensation: The expected base compensation for this role is: $93,400 - $149,200 Actual base compensation within the identified range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.

  • Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
