Class Definition

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To be responsible for planning, organizing and directing a group work program at a State institution; to coordinate such a program with the rehabilitation program of the institution for the purpose of assisting in the treatment of emotionally or mentally disturbed individuals within the group; and to do related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receives close administrative supervision relative to the policies and objectives of the institution; technical supervision is received through staff conferences or consultations with superiors at which time proposed group activities are discussed and plans formulated for the treatment of individuals.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Exercises direct technical and administrative supervision over subordinates engaged in a group work program; reviews work for adherence to the needs of individuals and the policies of the institution.

Illustrative Examples of Work Performed

To be responsible for planning, organizing and directing a group work program consisting of sports, social activities, arts and crafts, dramatics, physical education, music, etc.

To participate actively as a leader or instructor in such activities.

To interview individuals under care in the institution in order to determine their interests and to arrange for participation in the recreational program.

To coordinate group work activities with the rehabilitation program of the institution by adapting and adjusting recreational plans, procedures, tools and techniques to operational situations and conditions in the institution.

To observe the actions of mentally or emotionally disturbed individuals participating in recreational activities and prepare records which are indicative of progress or regression in the rehabilitation process.

To participate in case conferences with members of the staff for the purpose of evaluating group work methods, techniques and results and planning activities to meet the needs of individuals within the group.

To work individually with problem cases and implement special group work techniques recommended at staff conferences.

To arrange for proper custodial services and for program coverage by group work personnel for all activities.

To coordinate the services of volunteer workers with the activities of the program.

To arrange for participation of individuals in community activities outside the institution.

To do related work as required.

Required Qualifications for Appointment

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques used in group work; a working knowledge of the principles of psychology and the dynamics of human behavior; the ability to adapt and adjust recreational plans, tools and techniques to specific needs of individuals in an institution; the ability to plan, direct and review the work of subordinates engaged in a group work program; and related capacities and abilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education: Such as may have been gained through: graduation from a junior college of recognized standing with specialization in liberal arts or successful completion of at least two years of academic study in a college of recognized standing majoring in liberal arts; and

Experience: Such as may have been gained through: employment as a group or recreation leader in a public or private agency with responsibility for adapting recreational activities to the needs of individuals within the group.

Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

At the time of appointment must be physically qualified to perform assigned duties as evidenced by a physician's certificate.

Also, be advised that a new provision in RI General Law 35-6-1 was enacted requiring direct deposit for all employees. Specific to new hires, the law requires that all employees hired after September 30, 2014 participate in direct deposit.

Accordingly, any employee hired after this date will be required to participate in the direct deposit system. At the time the employee is hired, the employee shall identify a financial institution that will serve as a personal depository agency for the employee.
