This position is responsible for the design and engineering of the Burlington Electric Department generating facilities modifications, upgrades, and improvements to ensure the reliability of the generating assets.

Union Affiliation: Non-Union

Pay Grade MF3: $102,859.33 - $168,983.36 Annually

Please note: BED is looking to hire one Generational Engineer. Applications for the Associate Generation Engineer, Generation Engineer, and Senior Generation Engineer will all be considered to fill this opening.

  • Perform engineering functions for all generating facilities within Burlington Electric Department (BED) including McNeil Generating Station, Chace Mill Winooski One Hydroelectric, Burlington GT, Airport Solar, and BED Pine Street Solar facilities.

  • Design, document, and implement modifications for Generation control systems.

  • Program and maintain programable logic controllers (PLC) logic related to all generating asset controls and operations.

  • Provide engineering support on any Generation system or piece of equipment.

  • Provide engineering support for the operation and maintenance of air emission and water discharge monitoring equipment.

  • Prepare specifications, evaluate proposals, and coordinate outside engineering services.

  • Provide engineering drawings with detailed work instructions for all assigned capital projects.

  • Ensure that all plant drawings are up-to-date to depict as-built conditions.

  • Maintain documentation including engineering drawings, equipment manuals, and file organization.

  • Perform efficiency studies on generating facilities and individual pieces of equipment.

  • Provide project management for all assigned Generation capital and maintenance projects.

  • Submit compliance certifications for any BED asset as assigned.

  • Assist in the development of BED's generation facilities budgets and five-year capital plans.

  • Assist in the development of generating facilities inspection and maintenance plans.

  • Assist with equipment inspections and preventive maintenance functions.

  • Assist with electronics troubleshooting and repair.

  • Assist in outage planning and coordination.

  • Assist with repairs and solutions after forced outages at all Generation assets as needed to get the asset operational in a safe and effective manner.

  • Recommend spare parts purchases.

  • Prepare written Standard Operating Procedures as needed.

  • Design and maintain the instrument quality assurance program.

  • Perform generation outage requests and market bidding activities as needed.

  • Plan and conduct in-house training sessions as needed.

  • Conduct tours for the public and technical visitors as needed.

  • Become a qualified Level One and Level two Operator for BED Gas Turbine.

Non-Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform other duties as required.

  • Must possess a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.

  •  Eight (8) years experience in electrical power production facilities or electrical utility engineering is required.

  • Professional Engineering license (PE) is required.

  • Experience in programming programable logic controllers (PLCs) is required.

  • Knowledge of National Electric Code (NEC), National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), and VOSHA/OSHA Standards required.

  • Demonstrated communication skills required.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects within established deadlines.

  • Ability to keep abreast of current technologies and procedures.

  • Professional behavior that reflects excellent customer service and encourages working partnerships with internal (e.g. employee) and external (e.g. ratepayer) customers is required.

  • Regular attendance is necessary and is essential to meeting the expectations of the job functions.

  • Ability to understand and comply with City standards, safety rules and personnel policies.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Vermont driver's license required.

  • Ability to attend evening meetings as well as travel to conferences, workshops or other professional meetings required.

  • Ability to use special personal protective equipment such as hearing protection, rubber boots, leather gloves, safety glasses, respirator (fit test required using OSHA criteria), hard hat, etc.

  • Ability to work outside where there is exposure to heat/cold or moisture, hazardous materials, and energized wires/equipment.

  • Ability to work in and around energized, high voltage equipment, in accordance with all applicable safety requirements.

  • Ability to work long hours to accommodate workload or emergencies.

  • Answering phone calls after business hours is required.
