Team

NIKE, Inc. does more than outfit the world's best athletes! It is a place to explore potential, obliterate boundaries and push out the edges of what can be. The company looks for people who can grow, think, dream and create.

Its culture thrives by embracing diversity and rewarding imagination. The brand seeks achievers, leaders and visionaries. At Nike, it's about each person bringing skills and passion to a challenging and constantly evolving game.

We are looking for two Senior FEA (Finite Element Analysis) Engineers, one to join the Performance Engineering Lab within the Advanced Digital Creation Studio in Innovation, and the other to join the Performance Engineering team with the Global Footwear Engineering team within the Product Creation organization!

Advanced Innovative Collective (AIC)- NXT // Advanced Digital Creation Studio // Performance Engineering Lab

The NXT Advanced Digital Creation Studio team provides a competitive advantage by using the power of modern technologies, methodologies, skills, and services to fuel sophisticated athlete insights, product innovation, and craft. We seek to identify and accelerate new digital approaches to generating athlete insights, crafting innovative products, and using advanced manufacturing methods to build compelling consumer product and services.

The Performance Engineering Lab, within the Advanced Digital Creation Studio, is focused on exploring new concepts for Nike products, such as footwear or apparel, and bringing understanding of the product function using predictive engineering tools.

Product Creation - Global Footwear Engineering // Performance Engineering

The Performance Engineering team, within Global Footwear Engineering, provides a competitive advantage by using the power of engineering, analytical, and simulation tools to offer footwear engineering insights to our Product Creation development teams.

This team is a centralized function that supports the footwear product development teams and will help build out FEA capabilities to support Product Creation development projects. The role of this team is to use mechanical engineering expertise to provide guidance and insights to product engineers, designers, and technical developers to enable confident decision making.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The Senior FEA Engineers will work with project teams to diagnose and understand technical problems and use appropriate engineering tools (including FEA) to provide insights to advise decision making, manage risk, and build confidence in product performance. They will use their engineering problem solving skills, FEA (Finite Element Analysis), and other analytical tools to evaluate design concepts early in the development phase and solve performance issues that surface later in the development cycle.

These roles are a blend of highly technical mechanical engineering and creative problem solving. Candidates for these roles need to have the strong engineering skills listed below and be eager to work with individuals from many different backgrounds. The right candidates will be creative, analytical engineers with FEA experience who take an entrepreneurial approach to helping teams understand and scope their work, applying a pragmatic approach to problem solving.

Although the day-to-day experience will be different in each role, much of the experience and expertise required is shared. The role within Product Creation will emphasize traditional engineering mechanics experience, while the role within Innovation will emphasize experience in using and crafting new computational engineering and FEA tools.

By applying, you will be considered for both roles. Interviewed candidates will have the opportunity to express their preference between the two roles.

WHAT YOU WILL WORK ON

If this is you, you will be working with several different multi-functional teams, including developers, designers, and many other experts to understand their technical challenges and help identify the right analytical tools and simulation approaches to advise a solution. Your role on these teams is to provide guidance on how and when to apply FEA, other computational engineering tools, and workflow improvements to make recommendations.

You will often be the only engineering expert on a team, so you will provide not only simulation results, but also contribute engineering advice on many of the following: alternate material selection, design options, test method considerations, failure implications, and design solutions for projects lasting from a few months to a few years. As part of these teams, you will have the opportunity to communicate and interpret highly technical information to a diverse audience, whether within or outside of the project team. Either role would have you dividing your time between project meetings, collaborating with other teammates in small groups, and doing the hands-on computer work to contribute to your projects.

WHO YOU WOULD WORK WITH

In the Senior FEA Engineer role within Innovation, you would be reporting to the Performance Engineering Research Director. You would collaborate closely with other FEA Engineers, Computational Engineers, the Nike Sports Research Lab, Design (including Computational Design), and material innovation teams. Outside of Innovation, you would connect with Product Creation engineering teams, the Mechanical & Materials Lab, and Air Manufacturing Innovation.

In the Senior FEA Engineer role within Product Creation, you would report to and partner with the Director of Performance Engineering to collaborate with the Innovation FEA team, Product Creation footwear engineers, and mechanical test lab to develop and refine simulation methods to help ensure product performance and product excellence. You will also partner with the mechanical test lab, NSRL, and footwear product testing to develop and validate simulation methods to correlate to athlete* feedback.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or similar

  • 3+ years' demonstrated ability applying engineering knowledge with a focus on engineering mechanics to explore, inform, and recommend engineering solutions

  • Experience using FEA tools (ANSYS, Abaqus, Hyperworks, etc.) and methods in a professional setting

  • Experience with navigating multi-functional teams and communicating with vital partners across the organization

  • Proven ability to communicate and present technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

What additional experience is nice to have:

  • Industry experience with FEA tools and methods specifically with non-linear materials and deformation

  • Experience using programming/scripting languages (Python, C#, MATLAB, etc.)

  • Experience working within a Unix environment

  • Strong understanding of Mechanics of Materials, including non-linear materials and deformation

  • Experience working with global counterparts
