BENICIA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT SENIOR FOOD SERVICE ASSISTANT DEFINITION Under general supervision, to perform tasks related to heating food, setting up serving line, serving food, record keeping, and cleaning; to collect and account for money for meals and a la carte sales; working with students to improve customer service; and to do related work as required. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES The tasks listed in this section are representative of duties assigned to positions in this class.

This list is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the tasks assigned to positions in the class, and it is not expected that all of the tasks listed are necessarily assigned to all positions in the class. Receive, prepare, and store of food received at a school satellite kitchen; rethermalize prepared foods and hold at proper temperature for serving. Prepare a variety of foods by performing tasks such as cleaning and chopping fruits and vegetables; assembling sandwiches and salads; mixing salad dressings, puddings and gelatins from standard recipes; opening cans; heating foods; panning foods; cutting prepared foods to serving sizes and preparing beverages.

Assist in the preparation and cooking of main dishes and other items, as assigned. Estimate the amount of each food portion needed and place orders with the central kitchen following established procedures; prepare advance orders for a school menu and a la carte items. Set up and replenish food offerings throughout the serving period.

Collect lunch tickets and money, and make change. Sell lunch and a la carte items. Sell lunch tickets.

Account for money received and balance money and tickets with sales reports.

Maintain records of money owed by staff and by students who forget their money. Prepare daily sales reports.

Maintain cleanliness of work area following each task. Maintain proper care, cleanliness, and sanitation of equipment; wash dishes, pots and pans, cooking and serving utensils and other kitchen equipment. Take inventory of food and supplies and complete inventory sheets.

Maintain student records using established guidelines for meals and money. Request equipment and facility repairs from Food Services. Participate in District-mandated training and retraining programs.

Perform related work as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: English language usage.

Serving of foods in large quantities. Simple record keeping techniques. Weights, measures, and basic arithmetic.

Appropriate safety precautions and procedures. Meal regulations on offer versus service and meal accountability. Ability to:

Maintain equipment in a clean working order. Make simple arithmetic calculations with accuracy. Plan and organize work to meet schedules and timelines.

Prepare and serve food in large quantities. Use commercial kitchen equipment safely. Maintain records.

Use computer to adjust recipes and maintain inventory records. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Any combination of training, education, and experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge and abilities stated above, and the ability to perform the duties of the position. A typical qualifying entrance background is one year of large quantity food production experience in institutional or commercial food service, or experience at or equivalent to the level of Food Service Assistant in the Benicia Unified School District, from which the candidate has gained the skills, knowledge, and abilities listed above.

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Vision: (which may be corrected) to read small print; to distinguish shades of color. Hearing: (which may be corrected) to understand speech over a telephone; hear sounds which warn of potential danger; tolerate exposure to noisy conditions. Speech: to speak with a level of proficiency to be understood in face-to-face communications, in noisy conditions, and over the telephone.

Upper Body Mobility: use hands and fingers to feel, grasp, and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers, twist and bend at wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; twist and bend at torso; turn, raise, and lower head Lower Body Mobility: to walk on even surfaces; bend at waist; stoop; stand for prolonged periods of 4 hours; climb stairs; and step over objects. Strength: to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects which weigh as much as 50 pounds on a frequent basis. Smell: to distinguish strong odors that may warn of equipment malfunction or danger.

Environmental Requirements: frequent and extreme changes in temperature; work independently; encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; exposure to harsh chemicals; high noise levels; work performed in confined spaces. Mental Requirements: to read, write, understand, interpret and apply routine information; math skills at a basic level; exercise good judgement; give verbal and written instructions; respond to difficult or emergency situations; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures.
