Job Duties
The Virginia Retirement System (VRS) is seeking a Senior Financial Controls Analyst to assist the Financial Controls Supervisor with ensuring the accuracy and reliability of agency financial transactions and information in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), applicable state and federal laws, and agency and state fiscal policies and procedures. The role performs analysis and reconciliations on the most complicated general ledger accounts, and performs a variety of banking transactions, ensuring that appropriate and correct documentation and records are maintained. The position will also ensure that the appropriate policies and procedures are in place to ensure that the agency complies with all relevant state regulations.
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Performs analysis and reconciliations on complex general ledger accounts, ensuring data aligns with VRS business systems, the Department of Accounts (DOA) and the Virginia Department of Treasury records. Takes prompt action to research and resolve discrepancies as necessary.
Serves as a resource and back-up to Financial Controls Analysts and provides assistance to the Financial Controls Supervisor as requested.
Possesses and maintains knowledge of VRS accounting system, recommends and test changes for improvement.
Processes monthly bank reversals and stop payments and ensures accurate record-keeping.
Assists with developing and maintaining internal policies and procedures ensuring the agency is in compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
Files and maintains accurate physical and digital records per state fiscal policies and procedures.
Protects the integrity of VRS and the State of Virginia financial systems.
Participates in cross-hierarchal teams and contribute to improving services across agency lines.
Effectively works with all levels of management and staff to improve processes and procedures.
Completes special projects and other duties as requested.
Minimum Qualifications
Highly desired candidates will possess: High School Diploma or equivalent.
Five (5) years of reconciliations experience including experience in internal controls, banking, audit, public accounting or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office products to include Word, Excel, and Office.
Demonstrated experience with internal controls, reconciliations, general accounting principles and procedures, and office administration.
Knowledge of Virginia Department of Accounts systems, policies, and procedures.
Strong analytical skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to accurately enter and reconcile financial transactions.
Strong customer service, communication, and organization skills.
Ability to follow established procedures; complete assignments within established deadlines; work well under pressure; solve problems; prioritize; manage time; and work independently with minimal supervision.

Special Instructions
Currently this position has a Hybrid Work Schedule. The selected candidate must be able to work two days in the office (Tuesday and Wednesday) and three days remote (Monday, Thursday, and Friday). However, the supervisor can require additional in office days as needed.
