Sr. Financial Analyst & Business Partner
We are looking for a Sr. Financial Analyst & Business Partner to join ITHAKA, a highly-successful non-profit with a mission to expand access to knowledge and education around the world whose brands include Artstor, Ithaka S+R, JSTOR, and Portico. You will be part of the Financial Planning & Analysis group (FP&A), a small collaborative team that supports the organization and all of its day-to-day and strategic needs.
As Sr. Financial Analyst & Business Partner, you use financial analysis to facilitate change by working closely with, and providing a service to, a number of different ITHAKA departments. You provide targeted strategic insights across every department of a business and base your insights on analysis of operational performance, industry dynamics, macro-economic trends and the competitor landscape.
This is a strategic role. Information and reporting are just the tip of the iceberg. What really matters is your ability to see what financial information is required, find ways to research, discover, or forecast that information and share it in a form leadership can understand. One of your key roles will be to help others understand reports, analysis, and scenarios and use it to make #evidence-based decisions about departmental strategy.
To excel in this position you must be able to work well in a rapidly changing environment and be comfortable proposing, justifying, initiating, and implementing change. Excellent communication skills are necessary and required.
This role will work closely with our Technology and Product senior leaders and will report to the Director, FP&A, whose team provides financial and analytical advice and support to ITHAKA's leaders to ensure our strategic goals are met.
Serve as finance business partner for Technology and Product functions, providing the strategic insights and market research needed to inform high-level decisions.
Work with business leadership to analyze opportunities, process improvement programs and research on various industry/company trends and translate financial information into actionable business insights.
Develop methodologies, dashboards, models and scenarios for business budgeting and reporting using business metrics, OKRs and KPIs, and original research.
Drive simplification and standardization across the various functions of the organization.
Proactively investigate key business issues and provide clear, concise analyses and recommendations. Identify and raise risks and opportunities using financial projections and help leadership understand and weigh them in context and using #evidence.
Help teams analyze and understand the costs and value of their work and make informed forecasts and decisions based on research and models you provide.
Collaborate with the Finance accounting and Work, Life & Culture teams on a variety of initiatives, including the monthly close process, and develop presentations and reports for leadership.
Build partnerships and maintain strong relationships with all senior managers and their teams throughout the organization.
Lead multiple projects and be accountable for project success.
Make financial reports and documents understandable to non-Finance readers and explain the reports and concepts to staff as needed.
Work on special projects as assigned to meet business needs. This may include acquisition analysis, pricing analysis, and portfolio and market analysis.
Experience and Skills
A finance business partner needs to be an excellent project manager as well as a creative thinker. This is a role that calls for both a starter and a coordinator. You must be able to apply your analytical skills beyond the traditional functions of finance and to bring them to bear on a broad range of commercial issues. These issues must then be effectively brought to life for senior management teams. This is why the ability to listen, interpret, influence, negotiate, inspire and challenge are all vital to the role.
BA/BS in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field of study, MBA preferred.
3-5 years of experience in finance or accounting with a strong financial modeling role, in-depth knowledge of accounting principles and their practical application.
Technology/Product Finance experience a must.
Ability to solve complex problems with clear and concise solutions by examining various perspectives. Flexible strategic thinker open to change when the evidence supports it.
Strong business acumen; ability to translate big-picture issues into understandable financial analysis or vice versa, and know how to go to the right level of detail for usable analysis.
Self-starter, able to take on challenges working independently and under minimal guidance. Never satisfied with finding symptoms, always looking for root causes.
Excellent verbal and written presentation skills, a customer-focused approach, and the confidence to work with senior management are a must.
Demonstrated leadership and partnering skills, including success in influencing outside of the direct reporting line. Proven track record as an effective liaison between finance and senior managers.
Exceptional attention to detail and ability to reliably meet project deadlines. Strong analytical skills, in-depth knowledge of accounting principles and advanced proficiency with financial analysis software.
Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion, diligence, and good judgment.
Familiarity with both Microsoft Office and Google GSuite, including top-notch skills in Excel/GoogleSheets, and Powerpoint/GoogleSlides.
Ability to travel occasionally to other ITHAKA office locations, approximately 10%.
