Partners Finance manages all finance functions, excluding Treasury, and provides business experience and financial expertise to strategy formulation and decision-making. Today there are over 1,000 Finance employees at 21 locations providing transactional and analytic services to their entities and to the system.

SENIOR FINANCIAL ANALYST

This position supports the Director of Finance of the Brigham and Women's Hospital. The Senior Financial Analyst will:

  • Provide high level and in-depth budget and monthly variance analysis for Clinical and Non-Clinical areas.

  • Present monthly budget updates to assigned Hospital Senior Vice Presidents.

  • Work with Director of Finance in the development, maintenance, and enhancement of the departmental reporting packages for various levels of Hospital leadership.

  • Work closely with hospital management and local finance staff on issues surrounding budget development, reporting, and special projects.

  • Assist in the coordination and development of the annual operating budget process.

  • Analyze proposed operating budget requests; coordinate questions for discussion and participate in negotiation of budget issues with management; make recommendations to management regarding proposed spending.

  • Analyze proposed operating budget requests and ensure compliance with established hospital operating targets.

  • Work with Accounting, Operations Management, and Budget team, to understand and evaluate financial performance and major financial issues facing the organization.

  • Develop, analyze and prepare variety of regular and ad hoc operational reporting analyses and projects for issues related to management inquiries and initiatives. Compile financial schedules and participate in special projects as requested.

  • Evaluate the relationships between hospital volume activity and the impact on department operations and monthly operating expenses.

  • For areas of responsibility, prepare monthly variance analysis, cost per unit analysis, and periodically assist in the review of reports on budget related issues and special projects.

  • Work on various monthly, quarterly and annual budget presentations.

  • Leverage access to multiple systems such as Hyperion Smartview, Hyperion Planning, EPIC, Tableau, EPSI, Position Control, PeopleSoft Financials and Human Resources Management System to enhance Hospital financial analytics.

  • Design and maintain accurate records and databases.

  • Work with operational managers on quarterly forecasts as part of annual budget process and month end closing account analysis.

  • Identify opportunities for system development with strategies for new system implementation such as expense reallocations, position control, and ad hoc reporting.

The Senior Financial Analyst will have the ability to work from home 3 days per week and balance the remainder of their time at Brigham & Women's Hospital Campus and the Assembly Row Campus after successful completion of your probationary period.

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics or related field. Masters degree a plus.

  • Use of Hyperion Financial Planning, Hyperion Financial Reporting, Essbase & Smartview reporting, creation of Excel macros a plus.

  • Three to five years experience in healthcare or hospital finance preferred.

  • Must be extremely well organized to handle multiple tasks simultaneously under sometimes tight deadlines

  • Take-charge ability and excellent judgment in determining and leveraging resources.

  • Exceptional judgment and discretion in interacting with management on sensitive fiscal and confidential issues.

  • Strong financial and revenue analysis skills.

  • Strong Excel, PowerPoint and Access skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in teams.

  • Ability to work independently with operating managers on issues such as cost per unit analysis, forecasting and variance analysis.

GENERAL SUMMARY / OVERVIEW The Research Finance Manager is a key member of the Partners HealthCare central research management office, and is a primary point of contact for Principal Investigators(PIs) and Department Administrators at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and other institutions within the Partners HealthCare System. The Research Finance Manager is committed to identifying and adhering to best practices in grants and contracts administration, while upholding the highest standards of integrity and fiduciary responsibility. The Research Finance Manager will proactively address the demands of research grant administration by providing exceptional customer service to Partners' distinguished research community and collaborators in their pioneering efforts in science and medicine. The Research Finance Manager supervises a team of Research Finance Specialists who are responsible for managing the financial activities of an assigned portfolio of research departments. The Manager is responsible for ensuring that awards are administered in a fiscally responsible manner, reconciled on a timely basis and accurately reported and closed out at project end. The manager will train and develop staff, monitor workload and provide performance feedback for all staff members on his/her team. The Research Finance Manager will act both independently and as a member of a dynamic group to achieve the goals of the Research Finance team and of Partners Research Management overall. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Supervise, train and mentor a team of up to seven Research Finance Specialists, who each are responsible for the financial administration of an assigned portfolio of research departments. Ensure that awards are managed in a fiscally responsible manner and in full compliance with all applicable rules and regulations established by sponsors, Partners HealthCare and Partners Hospitals. Meet formally with staff to ensure a comprehensive approach to portfolio management. Work with staff to achieve monthly goals. Resolve issues or escalate to senior management as necessary. Communicate performance expectations, assign work, manage work flow and provide training to staff as needed. Supervise the preparation of financial reporting to sponsors, including Federal and Non-Federal Financial Status Reports and Final Invoices in accordance with contract, subcontract and grant agreements. Review the financial reports and invoices to ensure compliance with sponsor requirements, deadlines, institutional policies and agreement with underlying financial records. Hold signature authority for Federal and Non-federal financial reports. Ensure an efficient and complete monthly financial close. Review and approve non-personnel cost transfers and other journal entries that require management authorization. Ensure journals are processed timely and within established deadlines. Confirm that cost transfers comply with PHS policies and funding agency regulations. Work with staff to close out projects on a timely basis. Ensure systems are updated to properly reflect the final financial standing of the project. Communicate Federal and non-federal sponsor regulations, institutional policies and procedures to staff and the Partners research community. Stay current on newly proposed and/or enacted rules and regulations. Field inquiries from Department Administrators and PIs. Serve as a resource for resolution of administrative and financial questions or issues. Compile and review performance metrics. Provide updates to senior management on a regular basis. Formally evaluate staff on an annual basis using the Partners Performance Evaluation Form. Provide performance feedback routinely throughout the year. Contribute to the development and revision of Partners Research Management policies and standard operating procedures. Contribute to the preparation of training materials and conduct training sessions within Research Finance and to the research community. Support all restricted fund audits including Partners fiscal year-end financial audit and annual A-133 audit. Meet with counterparts across other areas of Research Management to ensure consistency, coordination and promote communication and collaboration. Provide coverage when team members are out of the office. Other projects as assigned. Bachelor's Degree in Accounting/Business. MBA, MA, MPH or other advance degree preferred. 5-7 years solid accounting experience in a hospital or university setting, and knowledge of complex federal grants and contracts regulations required. SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES Strong computer skills, excellent problem solving and organizational skills are required. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with Principal Investigators, hospital administrators, Research Management peers, senior management, government and private awarding agencies, auditors and others. Ideal candidate is self-directed, possesses ability to use high degree of judgment, can prioritize duties, meet multiple deadlines and handle complex and sensitive confidential information with discretion.
