SENIOR FIELD REPRESENTATIVE HEALTH EDUCATION

The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Senior Field Representative Health Education within the Office of Early Childhood.

This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that if you are the successful candidate for this position, you will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date you will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission. Candidates must score and rank high enough on this examination in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.

DEFINITION: Under direction conducts the field and office work involved to carry out specific projects in one or more health education programs; takes the lead over one or more Field Representatives and/or other professional or technical staff; does other related duties.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

1.Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Health Education, Community Education, Nursing, Public Health or related fields.

2.One (1) year of experience in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of diversified health education programs in a local health department or state or local health agency.

3.Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.Plans and organizes health education aspects of a specified health project.

2.Identifies community resources and leaders for a specific problem, program, or geographic area.

3.Evaluates the support and cooperation of local individuals and groups.

4.Conducts field trips, studies and surveys in support of program activities.

5.Visits, consults, and provides technical assistance and guidance to individuals and groups involved in health education activities.

6.Identifies health information needs for specific areas; assists in the planning, preparation, distribution, and evaluation of related health education materials.

7.Provides and discusses health information.

8.Provides guidance and instruction to Field Representatives and other professional or technical staff.

9.Oversees activities of volunteers and community aides. Develops health education activities.



  1. Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with those interested in or involved in the work of the program.

  2. Collects, reviews and prepares materials for health education activities.

  3. Prepares reports and correspondence for health education activities. Maintains records and files.

  4. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

  5. Perform other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor.


KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

1.Knowledge of the principles of public health.

2.Knowledge of current public health issues and the types of services needed to address them.

3.Knowledge of the methods used to collect and analyze data. Knowledge of the methods used to conduct studies and surveys.

4.Ability to plan and organize specific aspects of an assigned health project.

5.Ability to provide guidance and instruction other professional and technical staff.

6.Ability to oversee the activities of volunteers and aides. Ability to conduct field trips, surveys, and studies.

7.Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those interested or involved in the work of the program. Ability to collect and analyze data.

8.Ability to prepare reports and correspondence. Ability to maintain records and files.

9.Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.



  1. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

REPORTS TO: Department Head

SALARY, EMPLOYMENT PERIOD AND UNION AFFILIATION

1.Salary: $52,000 - $60,000

2.Employment Period: Twelve (12) Months

3.Union Affiliation: Newark Teachers Union
