Summary
Under general supervision, is responsible for operating and maintaining various types of light to heavy equipment used in the construction and maintenance of County roadways, drainage structures and associated rights of way (see list under "Working Conditions" below); performs skilled and lead activities in the completion of various construction and maintenance projects at advanced journeyman level; and performs related duties as required.

Duties and Responsibilities
Supervises and coordinates the work activities of road construction/maintenance crews
Assists in estimating amounts of materials and supplies required to complete construction/repair projects
Operates cranes, graders, excavators, bulldozers, tractor trailer and other light to heavy road construction equipment in the construction and maintenance roadways and drainage structures
Ensures that established safety procedures are followed, including, but not limited to, those involving placement of road barricades, direction of traffic, and use of safety apparel/equipment
Oversees on-the-job training for all levels of employees under supervision of this position including Crew Worker, Equipment Operator I, and Equipment Operator II
Completes service checks, maintenance and minor repairs of vehicles and various pieces of road equipment
Transports tools, materials, vehicles and equipment to and from construction/maintenance locations using various vehicles including tractor trailers
Operates heavy equipment in the demolition of various structures obstructing rights of way
Prepares and administers various logs, forms and reports including time sheets and work orders
Performs related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, and four (4) years experience operating light to heavy road construction and equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Knowledge of road equipment mechanical operations; knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy road construction and maintenance equipment; knowledge of safety standards and practices
Skill in the operation of hand tools; skill in setting and verifying horizontal and vertical control on maintenance and construction projects; skill in performing basic mathematical calculations
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions including road construction plans; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees and the general public
Must have a valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
Required to be on-call 24-hours a day
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
Generally working in indoor conditions, exposure to temperature variations
Occasional exposure to insects, insect and animal bites, poisonous plants, oily and damp/wet surfaces, dust, high noise areas, unfavorable fumes and vapors and hazardous chemicals
Frequently moves items weighing up to 10-25 pounds
Occasionally moves items weighing up to 25-100 pounds
Occasionally moves about the office
Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
Generally operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
Positions self to perform essential functions
Must be able to remain in a stationary position
The following equipment is representative of the size, weight and complexity appropriate for Senior Equipment Operator: Oil Distributor (2000 gallon or more), Dozer, Truck (with mounted attachments), Grader Motor (All), Asphalt Paver, Excavator (All), Chip Spreader, Front End Loader/Back Hoe, Tractor Trailer (Equipment and Material Haul), Track Loader, Wheel Loader (3 cubic yards or more), and Truck-Trailer Combination. Temporary assignment to higher or lower level equipment may occur when necessary.
