The City of Pasadena is looking for an advanced journey, working lead level Senior Equipment Mechanic who will supervise, inspect, diagnose and repair operating problems in emergency vehicle apparatus and equipment and heavy-duty gasoline, electric, CNG and diesel construction equipment in the Building Systems & Fleet Management Division of the Public Works Department. This division is responsible for maintaining, repairing and disposing of the City's fuel-powered fleet, which consists of approximately 1,250 vehicles and other pieces of equipment presents and presents an exciting opportunity for a hard-working, reliable, and dependable professional.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will have recent advanced journey level experience working on heavy-duty equipment, loaders, street sweepers, trash trucks and fire trucks. Have the necessary electrical diagnostic skills to effectively diagnose and repair computer controlled engines, transmissions, and CNG controlled systems.

Essential Functions

  • Leads, provides work guidance and direction, and participates in the work of equipment mechanics; provides information, instruction and training on work processes, proper use of equipment and safe work practices; estimates personnel, equipment and material requirements for assigned jobs.

  • Inspect, diagnoses, repairs and services a variety of firefighting and emergency medical services vehicles including pumpers, water tankers, aerial ladder truck and ambulances; performs and leads skilled repair work in the servicing, diagnosis, maintenance, repair and testing of specialized fire apparatus systems and components including fire pumps, pump transmissions, pump pressure-control systems, transfer valve systems, priming systems, water tanks, foam systems, high-pressure hydraulic systems, aerial devices, safety interlock systems, electronic diesel engines, electronic transmissions, secondary braking systems and other related systems.

  • Participates in the development and implementation of the City's emergency vehicle and heavy equipment preventive maintenance program; provides expert knowledge in the development of specifications and the selection of new construction and fire vehicles and equipment.

  • Installs, maintains and repairs emergency warning systems, both audio and visual, and communication systems for police and fire vehicles.

  • Coordinates, oversees or performs the repair of engines and transmissions, and the servicing and maintenance of the full range of fleet vehicles; oversees the completion of warranty repairs in accordance with manufacturer requirements.

  • Inspects, services and maintains fuel systems, including gas, diesel, compressed natural gas and other alternative fuel types;

  • Requisitions supplies and parts; obtains supplies and parts from stock inventory; maintains labor and material records.

  • Operates a variety of specialized computer and electronic diagnostic equipment and machinery.

  • Operates welding equipment and various hand and power tools; welds and repairs vehicle bodies and parts for heavy equipment; designs and fabricates modifications of vehicles and equipment.

  • Performs brake and emission testing and certification of vehicles and equipment; conducts special purpose testing including but not limited to electrical tests, component function tests, load tests and applicable pressure tests.

  • Test drives and ensures all repairs have been completed.

  • Maintains and repairs shop equipment; cleans and maintains assigned work area; disposes of hazardous materials according to established policies.

  • Provides road call services and performs emergency repairs to City vehicles and equipment, as necessary.

  • Reads and interprets schematics, shop manuals, blueprints and plans.

  • Creates and maintains records of inspections, work history on each vehicle including faults and corrective actions completed and time worked; performs state-required Basic Inspection of Terminals (BIT) inspections; ensures files are maintained in compliance with DMV and CHP regulations.

  • Participates in meetings and department safety training.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent

  • Four (4) years of journey-level experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles or construction equipment, at least two years of which includes heavy-duty truck maintenance, fire apparatus and emergency vehicles.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in the maintenance and repair of fire apparatus is preferred.

  • Individuals withsix (6)or more years of experience working withheavy-duty pieces of equipment,such as street sweepers,fire trucks, front loaders, boom trucks, trash trucks, and hydraulic systems will be deemed most qualified.

  • Must possess the diagnostic skills required to effectively diagnose and repair computer controlled engine, transmission and CNG controlled systems.

  • ASE certified, BIT inspection experience, and recent fire truck and apparatus repair experience are deemed most desirable.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process will consist of application evaluation, either a written exam and/or performance exam, and a department level interview.

VACANCY INFORMATION

There is currently one full-time vacancy in the Building Systems & Fleet Management Division of the Public Works Department. The resulting eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill this vacancy and similar vacancies in the future. Candidates selected for this position are subject to a one year probationary work period.

Special Requirements

Must possess a valid California Class C driver's license and comply with the City's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy during the course of employment. A valid California Class B driver's license is required prior to completion of the probationary period.

Must meet current State of California Department of Transportation (DOT) Brake Inspector qualifications. ASE Master Certifications in Medium-Heavy Truck and Truck Equipment are highly desirable and will be required as part of the Emergency Vehicle Technician I and II Certification process.

Possession of an Emergency Vehicle Technician I and II Certification is highly desirable. The successful completion of the California Fire Mechanics Academy Emergency Vehicle Technician I and II Certification must be completed within two years of hire, for those not already in possession of this certification.

Must have necessary hand and power tools required to perform duties of the job.
