VHB is seeking a Senior Environmental/Sustainability Planner to join our Watertown, MA office. The successful candiate will assist with the preparation of environmental documents and sustainability plans for a diverse set of clients. VHB provides environmental planning, sustainability, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) services to airports, state departments of transportation, and other entities. With a focus on technical analysis and short and long-term planning, VHB assists these nationwide clients meet their environmental requirements, as well as identifying and achieving their sustainability goals.

VHB provides NEPA services to federal agencies and state departments of transportation to help them successfully define the projects purpose and need, develop and analyze alternatives, analyze environmental impacts, and develop mitigation programs as required. Our NEPA services also include agency coordination, public outreach, and GIS/mapping. VHB is seeking a senior environmental professional with NEPA and state-level equivalent expertise.

VHBs sustainability reports and plans address many topic areas, such as air quality/ greenhouse gas emissions, climate change mitigation and adaptation, energy efficiency and renewable energy, water conservation and water quality, natural resource management, land use, solid waste management, community engagement, well-being and health, social responsibility, economic viability, and sustainable planning, design, and construction. We are looking for applicants that have demonstrated experience developing sustainability programs, with specialized experience in one or more of the above-listed topic areas.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with clients and manage other project team members including sub-consultants

  • Develop project scopes of work, fee estimates, and schedules

  • Develop sustainability plans, implementation strategies, and reports

  • Develop NEPA/MEPA project strategies, and lead teams through the environmental review process, including document preparation/production Coordinate with technical sub-consultants

  • Support business development activities

  • Collaborate with colleagues throughout VHBs multidisciplinary practice

  • Facilitate stakeholder meetings, public workshops and public hearings

  • Conduct and report on relevant environmental and sustainability technical analyses, as well as review analyses performed by others

  • Provide quality assurance and control

Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent verbal, analytical, written, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills

  • Highly organized

  • Capable of coordinating and performing multiple tasks

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)

  • Ability to communicate technical information and results verbally and graphically

  • Ability to problem solve and think creatively

  • Ability and willingness to travel

  • Knowledge of airports, transit and rail, local governments, energy efficiency, waste management/recycling, climate adaptation/resiliency planning a plus

  • Proficiency in economic and statistical analysis a plus

  • Experience in ArcGIS suite software a plus

Qualifications

  • BS/BA in planning, environmental planning, environmental science, or a related field (MS/MA a plus)

  • 7+ years of experience in environmental consulting or related field

  • Experienced with stakeholder facilitation, public presentations, and public hearings

  • Demonstrated experience with NEPA and state-level equivalent environmental review processes

  • Demonstrated experience developing sustainability programs

  • Advanced study or equivalent experience in urban or institutional planning a plus

  • Writing samples and references will be required
