Senior Engineer/Project Manager

Sparton is a leading contract design and manufacturing company with a specialization in electronic and electro-mechanical assemblies. Our customers include, Military, Medical, Biotechnology and Aerospace companies that are highly regulated with specialized needs.

Basic Purpose of Position: Directs a multi-discipline team in the system-level design of complex medical devices. This position is responsible for both engineering efforts and customer interactions from proposal generation to final project review.

Primary or Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides technical leadership for a multi-disciplinary project team over the full product lifecycle.

  • Manages one or more projects at a time.

  • Ensures technical requirements, financial goals, and project timelines are met.

  • Understands materials selection, tooling and manufacturing processes

  • Assigns tasks and deadlines to project engineers. Monitors progress and provides feedback.

  • Provides progress reports, prototype demonstrations, project updates, and other communication to customers.

  • Presents program reviews and reports to management.

  • Creates proposals, project plans, and benchmark measurements.

  • All other duties as assigned.

  • Ensure that all assignments are performed in compliance with all applicable Federal, State, Provincial and Company safety and health regulations, and where applicable, proper personal protective equipment is utilized.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education/Experience: A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or similar field, 10+ years of design engineering experience, and 5+ years of experience in project management. A master's degree is preferred. Familiarity with electro-mechanical and medical system designs and requirements, particularly IEC 60601 are preferred. Should be familiar with advanced regulatory, quality system, and/or engineering design requirements.

  • Preferred experience with any of the following standards: US FDA design controls, ISO 13485 design controls, IEC 62304, any regulated industry (aerospace, military, medical, etc).

  • Time Management: Able to track and prioritize individual and team-level tasks in a fast paced environment with several simultaneous projects. Possesses initiative and motivation to act independently to solve issues.

  • Language Ability: Able to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Able to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Able to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Able to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

  • Math Ability: Able to apply analytical mathematical concepts to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis; kinematics, and descriptive geometry.

  • Reasoning Ability: Able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Able to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

  • Design Skills:
    Basic CAD/3D modeling skills, especially knowledge of SolidWorks; detailed understanding of dimensioning and tolerancing; knowledge of properties and applications of common materials and materials processing.

  • Computer Skills:
    Word processing, spreadsheets, Internet software, and e-mail skills. Contact Management, Project Management and/or Enterprise Resource Planning software experience preferred.

Minimum Education: * Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent. Minimum Experience: * 5-7 years in medical device manufacturing and design environment. * Practical knowledge of FDA Quality System Regulations, ISO 13485 and Medical Device Directive. * Practical knowledge of ISO 14971, ISO 62366, IEC 60601-1 and related standards * General familiarity with industry best practices in electrical, mechanical, SW development, testing and manufacturing processes. Medical device sterilization process * Experience in interpreting electrical design schematics and mechanical design drawings. * Preferred experience with FDA Class II, IIb and III mechanical and electro-mechanical medical devices * Skilled in statistical methods e.g. ANOVA, SPC, test sample size g plans, Gauge R&R, and DOE. * Demonstrated proficiency utilizing quality lean sigma tools (e.g. Root Cause Analysis, QFD, Ishikawa, Kepner-Tregoe). * Experience establishing and implementing quality metrics for product development. * Special Skills: * Strong collaboration, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills. * Excellent verbal and written communication skills. * ASQ CQE (Certified Quality Engineer) preferred.
