General Notes

This is a grant-funded position and is renewable annually for up to four (4) years based on the availability of funding, work performance, and business need.

Purpose

The Senior Engineering Scientist position will focus on demonstrating the value of digital twins for advanced nuclear energy systems that utilize molten salts to enable licensable innovations in advanced nuclear reactors through the use of leadership-class computing facilities at the Texas Advanced Computing Center and integration with experimental systems as part of either the Nuclear and Radiation Engineering program of the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering or the Computational Nuclear Energy Group of the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences.

Responsibilities

  • Leads a reduced order modeling effort to accurately produce real-time nuclear software from high-resolution, multiphysics software with demonstrated excellence through journal publications of functional capability.

  • Diversifies the funding for nuclear digital twins through successful research proposals as the Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI

  • Recruits top talent, including graduate students, Postdoctoral Fellows, and Research Scientists, to join in computational nuclear energy research at the University of Texas at Austin

  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Ph.D in Engineering or Mathematics. Five (5) years of leadership experience in a related technology field. Experience with the use of nuclear multiphysics software and/or reduced order modeling. Excellent communication skills, leadership, and technical capability.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. and ten (10) or more years of experience in R&D for nuclear systems within the nuclear industry or academia. Research experience in one of the following fields: digital twins, computational fluid dynamics, instrumentation and controls, molten salt chemistry, chemical engineering, or nuclear engineering. Experience developing commercial quality software, digital twins, reduced-order models to enable digital twins; and/or instrumentation and control systems for enabling digital twins.

Salary Range

$150,000 + depending on qualifications

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
