The Sr. Engineering Manager will oversee and manage activities in valve commercialization, continuous improvement, value engineering, and validation. The Sr. Manager will provide direct, day-to-day oversight of initiatives and drive engineers to successfully complete projects and action items on-time and on budget. The Sr. Manager will support aligning Product and Process Engineering team members with partners throughout the Irvine site and build relationships with global partners within the Edwards' Cardiac Implant network. In addition, the Sr. Manager will look for opportunities to implement global best practices, develop standards for A3 project planning, improve business and product quality through CAPA support and coaching, improve training and development of engineers, and ensure overall business compliance through proper validations.

Essential job functions:

  • Manage supervisors, managers, and/or experienced professionals and/or oversee the work of one or more areas, functions, and/or locations and have some budgetary responsibilities.

  • Plan and direct complex project activities (e.g., VIP/value engineering, product engineering, process engineering, advanced engineering, core competencies) with large scale or significant business impact with the accountability for successful completion of all project deliverables to the business. Develop project plans, schedule, scope, and quality objectives while using engineering methods (e.g., SIX Sigma and LEAN methods), employing technical design skills to re-design/design on new products and/or processes. Lead in identifying risk, developing mitigation strategies, alternative solutions, resolving issues, etc. in collaboration with cross functional groups and key stakeholders.

  • Develop a robust talent development plan in alignment with functional growth strategies of the department.

  • Lead tactical execution utilizing cross-functional and/or departmental groups to develop and provide design recommendations that integrate into complex component or products.

  • Lead efforts to optimize business processes and systems by assessing business needs and developing, proposing and implementing technology solution options.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members on strategic program activities (e.g., VIP/value engineering, product engineering, process engineering, advanced engineering, core competencies).

  • Lead network and COE teams in driving standardized programs leveraging best in class practices.

  • Provide input to the strategy of the department and may lead the integration of new products and collaborate with NPI and R&D teams on product and process transfers.

  • Responsible for the tactical execution of value stream mindset and culture of continuous improvement based on lean and Six Sigma principles.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or scientific field with 12 years of related experience including people management. Master's Degree in engineering or scientific field is preferred.

  • Medical device or regulated industry experience preferred.

  • Expert understanding of engineering procedures while identifying applications of functional knowledge and existing methodologies to complex problems.

  • Expert understanding of related aspects of engineering processes and/or systems.

  • Knowledge of financial acumen as it relates to engineering.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage one or more teams and provide coaching and feedback, including responsibility for all employee actions including hire/fire authority and partnering with HR on all aspects of employee relations.

  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills including high discretion/judgment in decision making.

  • Excellent documentation and communication skills and interpersonal relationship skills including negotiating and relationship management skills with ability to drive achievement of objectives.

  • Ability to influence cross-functional partners, business units, and/or sites and may engage with and influence senior management.

  • Ability to develop and integrate metrics into the projects and operations that clearly demonstrate the value of engineering to the business.

  • Ability to interact professionally with all organizational levels and proactively escalate issues to appropriate levels of management in the organization.

  • Ability to work and excel within a fast paced, dynamic, and constantly changing work environment.

  • Frequently interacts with internal and external management and senior-level customer representatives concerning projects, operational decisions, scheduling requirements, and/or contractual clarifications.

  • Dedicated to quality client service and pro-active and responsive to client needs.

  • Provide leadership and direction to cross-functional teams to successfully implement global enterprise systems and related solutions.

  • Develop relationships and leverage them to influence change.

  • Proven successful project management leadership skills.

As an Sr Engineering Manager for strategic manufacturing transfer projects, you will be responsible in forming and leading the Engineering team on projects to create manufacturing capacity within various Medtronic sites. In this role, you will participate in and provide Engineering leadership for project phases including conception, planning, execution and successful implementation of projects and activities such as production line duplications, process improvements, V&V, as well as adoption of mechanization and automation. You will lead the Engineering team to ensure all team commitments and project contract metrics are met and communicated in a timely manner. You are expected to perform independently with little tactical input and is accountable for the outcome of large, complex projects. Day in the life: * Direct responsibility in leading, forming, mentoring, developing and coaching engineering team on meeting/exceeding performance expectations. * May develop, evaluate, implement and maintain manufacturing process to ensure technical quality assurance and control systems or reliability systems and standards pertaining to materials, techniques, or company products requirements are met. * Oversees the investigation and evaluation of existing technologies. * Lead or participate in appropriation of funds for projects through preparation and approval of capital expenditure requests * Lead or participate in intra-company product transfer projects within different geographies * Interface with senior management to communicate / report progress and receive strategic updates impacting the projects * Prepare executive level presentations and communications and communicate results clearly in both verbal and written formats to the needed audiences * Be the voice of Engineering and work closely with functional stake holders, managers and teams to develop holistic and detailed plans and roadmaps for project execution * Develop Engineering strategies to ensure successful execution of projects * Closely monitor progress vs. plan and take actions as required to keep activities on track * Lead Engineering team to solve complex problems including, but not limited to, those related to process, equipment, documentation, equipment validation, PC/OQ/PQ and manufacturing ramp * Provide Engineering leadership for projects.
