Job Description and Duties

The Division of Safety of Dams is responsible for evaluating the performance of existing jurisdictional dams and reviewing and approving applications for the construction of new dams as well as the alteration, enlargement, repair, and abatement of existing jurisdictional dams in California. Under the direction of the Enforcement Officer, the incumbent is primarily responsible for completing the most complex review of the Division of Safety of Dams' enforcement efforts.

This position requires the incumbent to be registered as a Civil Engineer and licensed with the Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

This position requires the incumbent be experienced in engineering practices and in applying these skills towards the Division's enforcement efforts. The incumbent must work cooperatively with Division management and staff, the Department's Executive Branch, the Department's Office of General Counsel (OGC), the Governor's Office of Emergency Services, dam owners, engineering consultants, and the general public.

Must have excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing; exercise good judgment; be able to lead projects; and maintain regular, consistent, and predictable attendance. Organizing field trips to the largest and highest hazard dams and those with the most complex technical problems may be necessary. This position may serve in one of the sections as established in the Incident Command System to assist the Department in performing its emergency response functions established in the California State Emergency Plan and the Department's Administrative Orders.
