Primary Duties & Responsibilities
As a Device Characterization Engineer, your primary responsibility is to support the development of high-power lasers, high-power optical amplifiers, high-speed photodiodes, and high-speed lasers, with a specific focus on device characterization. This entails owning the complete characterization process, from optical power and spectrum to thermal impedance and beyond. Additionally, you may be tasked with supervising engineering technicians to ensure accurate and efficient characterization procedures.
Education & Experience
Master's degree or equivalent education
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience.
Experience in optoelectronics device characterization, including optical power, optical spectrum, beam divergence, relative intensity noise, linewidth, small signal response (S11, S12, S21, S22), large signal response (eye diagram), bit error rate, thermal impedance, back reflection sensitivity, internal loss, dark current, responsivity, optical return loss (reflectometry), optical gain, noise figure, carrier leakage, MQW carrier overflow, mechanical stress distribution, facet temperature, temperature distribution along cavity, carrier diffusion into passive section, etc.
Skills & Other Requirements
Proficiency in formulating and executing test characterization plans, and generating comprehensive reports with minimal supervision.
Ability to independently build and operate test stations for characterization purposes.
Strong coding skills for test automation.
Self-motivated with exceptional attention to detail and problem-solving capabilities.
Proven ability to see tasks and projects through to successful completion.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
A drive for excellence in engineering and a commitment to contributing to the company's success.
Working Conditions
Primarily on-site, occasional travel to other Coherent sites possible.
Must be able to function in a fast-paced environment, carrying out multiple projects at a time.
Safety Requirements
All employees are required to attend scheduled training, follow the site EHS procedures and Coherent Corporate EHS standards. This includes the use of proper protective equipment (PPE) as required by the job responsibilities.
Managers will ensure that all safety and environmental procedures are followed consistently. They will ensure that risk assessments are performed, proper training, work instructions, required PPE is available, and will monitor compliance.

Depending on location, this position may be responsible for the execution and maintenance of the ISO 9000, 9001, 14001 and/or other applicable standards that may apply to the relevant roles and responsibilities within the Quality Management System and Environmental Management System.
