Aerojet Rocketdyne seeks a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering design team at our Huntsville, AL Defense headquarters.

This is a design engineering position with a focus on component and system design for solid propulsion systems used on solid rocket motors and/or controllable solid systems. Work is performed under limited general supervision.

The position exercises considerable latitude in determining objectives and approaches on assignments. The candidate will guide component design and system design of Nozzles, Igniters, Actuators, Pressure Vessel and Solid Propellant used in Solid Propulsion Systems.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

Under limited general supervision, the Senior Engineer performs professional assignments requiring complete working knowledge of application of concepts, practices, and techniques.

50% - Support mechanical design activities for solid propulsion systems and components. Solid propulsion design activities include strategic booster motors, tactical rocket motors and controllable solids.

Will independently develop design concepts, 3D models and support the development of detailed drawings for the manufacture of parts. Conduct trade studies and develop component specifications and procedures as required. Interact with component analysis, manufacturing, project engineering, quality and customer support groups. Plan and execute design tasks with limited general direction and work effectively within an Integrated Product Team (IPT) environment.

20% - Participate in shop floor and production hardware processing at suppliers and internally. Provide input to address nonconforming hardware, process planning, support production meetings, and work with supply chain to assure that design requirements are met. Support engineering drawing and specification updates at configuration change boards.

10% - Support development of test plans and technical reviews. Assist in the identification and support of risk reduction and environmental test requirements. This may include manufacturing pathfinders, subscale testing, component and system level qualification tests.

10% - Assist in preparation of material and support presentations for internal and external customers. Responsible for preparing engineering reports to support tolerance studies, engineering analyses or failure investigations, including technical close-out reports.

10% - With continuing development and experience, receives more difficult problems and supports more complex work. Contacts are primarily with immediate supervisor and other professionals in the assigned section or group.

Requirements

Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering and five (5) years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. An advanced engineering degree is a plus. A strong mechanical aptitude and experience with CAD software tools (CREO) is desired, as well as proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level.

Requires U.S. Citizenship. Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

Job Description The Senior Mechanical Facilities Engineer will design HVAC and Plumbing/Piping systems for an exciting range of mission critical to mission support projects. Project work will encompass: Plan, conduct, and coordinate detailed phases of HVAC and Plumbing design work with calculations, process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, layout of mechanical equipment and associated duct and piping systems, and sequences of operations. Develop mechanical construction and equipment specifications, test and inspection plans, and system design descriptions. Evaluate, select, and apply standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform a task or sequence of tasks for projects with less complex features, but also collaborate and use judgment to determine adaptations in methods for non-routine aspects of assignments and more complex projects. Perform engineering quality assurance checks of project designs. Support new project proposals with mechanical discipline scopes, budget estimates, and schedules. The Senior Mechanical Facilities Engineer will be a key member of a multi-disciplinary team of architectural and engineering staff producing project design packages of drawings, specifications, and calculations. The position includes a leadership component with task assignment and work coordination with engineers, designers, and administrative staff. Periodic travel to other Merrick offices or project site locations, including international travel, may be required. The ability to work independently, and yet be able to collaborate with other design disciplines and with guidance from team leadership, is a must. Experience sizing and selecting HVAC and plumbing/piping equipment (e.g. air-handling units, fans/blowers, pumps, cooling towers, chillers, boilers, coils, HEPA filtration systems, dampers, valves, and controls). Proficient in editing and writing mechanical construction and equipment specifications. Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel; experience using HVAC computer load and design programs such as Trane Trace software; knowledge of Revit building information modeling software is strongly preferred; and familiarity with AutoCAD. Working knowledge of ASHRAE, SMACNA, and NFPA standards. Working knowledge of IMC, IPC, and IBC codes. LEED or Green Globes accreditation is a plus.
