Haley & Aldrich is growing and we are seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to work with highly skilled professionals on diverse project teams in a dynamic environment primarily in the Rocky Mountain Region. This position will be in our Denver, Colorado office.


The successful candidate will:

  • Conduct routine inspection, synthesis, and analysis using approved procedures appropriate for their discipline

  • Perform field investigations and construction monitoring, working directly with subcontractors and constructors

  • Reduce, analyze, manage and report field, instrumentation, geological, and/or environmental data

  • Conduct geotechnical analyses including foundation design and ground improvement

  • Contribute to proposals and cost estimates

  • Preparation of reports and other client deliverables

  • Oversee the safe execution of all phases of projects to meet the client's objectives as well as company goals for revenue generation and profitability.


The successful candidate should:

  • Have at least 5 years of mining experience a plus

  • Experience in designing and executing mine development, permitting, operations and closure projects and mining related environmental, hydrogeology and engineering projects.

  • Possess project management capabilities and experience to effectively work with technical teams and projects.

  • Ability to work and collaborate with employees at all levels and across all disciplines

  • Ability to succeed in a team-oriented environment, interfacing with a variety of different groups, to accomplish project objectives.

  • Ability to work successfully in a team-oriented, collaborative environment with shared resources.

  • Must be an organized and detail oriented person passionate about the mining industry with high personal goals.

  • BS degree in Engineering (MS a plus)

  • P.E. or other registration

Dimensions Purpose * The Geotechnical Engineer Expert has a global scope that covers diverse and sometimes conflicting priorities. This position directly reports to the Senior Director Hydrological and Geotechnical Engineering, Technical Services, Mining, but has semi-firm lines to operating site Senior Management, or to Project Directors for Pipeline projects and M&A Targets. * Multiple Experts of Hydrology and Geotechnical Engineering will be established depending on level of need within the organization. As a first pass one Expert position will be created, to service the mines and advanced stage gate projects in the area of Underground Geotechnical Engineering. These experts will provide services globally. * The Geotechnical Engineering Expert will work with the existing global mine sites and stage gate projects to establish the systems and procedures as needed so that the relevant geotechnical data is collected, properly stored and analyzed. The Geotechnical Engineering Expert will be available as needed to support the implementation of the solutions selected. * The Geotechnical Engineering Expert will work in the development of the analysis tools needed to support the operations as well as facilitating technology and knowledge transfer to the mining operations. * The Geotechnical Engineering Expert will work together with the Directors of Hydrogeology and Geotechnical Engineering to pull the following functions together to ensure that cross functional constraints, goals, opportunities and risks are accounted for and a full and transparent path forward is mapped for current operating problems, stage gate projects and new mines. Additionally the Expert will be responsible for defining the standards and acceptable processes. * Facilitate the following groups toward Hydrological and Geotechnical standards: * Mine Planning * Mine Operations * Ground Dewatering * Surface Dewatering * Geomechanics * The Geotechnical Engineer Expert – Underground will draw on broad industry experience in underground mining to apply diversified engineering techniques to complex situations and as needed consult a panel of experts to ensure practical solutions. * The Geotechnical Engineer Expert works with the Senior Hydrological and Geotechnical Engineers increasing bench strength and mentoring of younger members of this global fraternity. Essential Duties * Maintain a high focus on safety by monitoring implementation of field practices at all Newmont sites. Comparison of monitoring results to standards or established appropriate practice. * Work with operating sites and a panel of world class experts to determine and set hydrological and geotechnical engineering standards and processes for each site or stage gate project. * Prepare geotechnical guidance and standards on how to setup a new or operating underground mine including: * setup of data collection procedures for mapping, logging, testing and monitoring; * appropriate testing programs to determine intact rock and rock mass strength; * guidelines for QC\QA for laboratory testing; * guidance on rock mass and soil classification systems and use; * guidance on database management and data storage; * geotechnical modelling of lithology, alteration, structure, rock mass, groundwater etc.; * geotechnical analysis and design using synthetic rock mass, kinematic, limit equilibrium, numerical, probabilistic etc.; * geotechnical monitoring systems and measurement techniques (data collection, storage and analysis); * definition of geotechnical parameters required for blasting design to limit damage to tunnel and stope walls; * ground support (design, installation practices, QA/QC); * backfill (design, testing methods, QA/QC, operating procedures, delivery and reticulation systems); * mining methods (geotechnical issues, design, sequencing); * underground operational mine planning (systems for development and stope design sign-off); * shafts and large excavations (geotechnical stability assessments, design, monitoring); * setting up training programs for all or any above * Collecting industry best practices and sharing these with mine sites where this could be applicable. Monitoring trends and industry to anticipate future opportunities and risks, facilitate technology and knowledge transfer between operations in the areas of Hydrology and Geotechnical Engineering. * Evaluate research and development projects and new technologies. * Work with operating sites to define and setup a review mechanism of the Ground Control plan to assess risks for underground operations. * Supply geotechnical engineering support to existing mine sites on an impromptu pull fashion. * Support of corporate initiatives. * AFE's will be reviewed for alignment to standards and future directions in hydrological and geotechnical engineering process. * The Expert will work with existing mine sites to ensure that Hydrological and Geotechnical policies, standards and processes are developed where appropriate. * The Expert will work with each mine site and technical office for technical development for all hydrological and geotechnical engineers from 104 grade level and higher. This will include facilitating the inter site transfer of staff when appropriate. * Additional to Career Technical Development, active mentoring of global staff in the areas of Hydrology and Geotechnical engineering will be undertaken. Training & Experience * In excess of 15 years of experience in underground mining. * M.Sc. Mining/Geotechnical or Geological Engineering. * Experience in operations as Chief or Principal Hydrological or Geotechnical Engineer with groups of at least 5 professional staff. * Good knowledge of: * Ground control plans for underground operations; * Geotechnical methods and design for a range of underground mining methods; * Underground geotechnical instrumentation and analysis; * Underground dewatering; * Underground mining; * Underground mining methods and backfill; * Risk assessment techniques. * First hand site experience dealing with major geotechnical failures. * Basic knowledge of: * Mine planning and valuation; * Open pit mining; * Geological modelling; * Acid rock classification; * Permitting; * Water quality discharge requirements; * Pumping, pressure and electrical requirement for water reticulation for pits and undergrounds; * Pit wall geotechnical instrumentation and analysis. Desired experience includes: * Overseas work experience in 1st, 2nd and 3rd world countries. * Start-up experience. * Experience in Project Evaluation at the Feasibility to ongoing operations stages. * Well networked into industry specialists and consultants. * Familiarity with business systems and standard office application software. * Ability to build and maintain strong communications network with peers, Project Managers, Mine Managers, Chief Engineers, and JV partner representatives. * Strong problem solving and 3D visualization skills. * Strong technical writing, group presentation, and interpersonal skills including cultural sensitivity. Working Conditions The Geotechnical Engineering Expert - Underground is based at the Head office in Greenwood Village, Colorado or at a regional office globally. Performance of the work requires travel (30-50% of work time) to domestic and international operations.
