ArcelorMittal Cleveland has an immediate opening for a Senior Engineer (Finishing) in our Operations Technology Division in Cleveland, Ohio. The following primary position responsibilities and key position requirements are intended to provide an overview of the position, but are not all-inclusive.

Job Description:

The Engineer

  • Operations Technology is responsible for the successful implementation of process improvement initiatives which directly result in a safer work environment, improved productivity, enhanced quality, and reduced costs.

This is a hands-on, "in the shop" type of position requiring a comprehensive knowledge of a Flat-roll Operating Facility, and a comfort with the shop floor environment and personnel.

While the area of influence and control of an Engineer

  • Operations Technology could be anywhere in the Cleveland Facility, the primary focus of this position is within the Rolling Divisions (from the movement, conditioning, re-heating and Hot Rolling of slabs into hotbands through the Cold Rolling operations including coating and shipping).

This position will report directly to the Manager

  • Operations Technology, while maintaining a close relationship and functionally reporting to the Rolling Divisions' Operations Managers with a hierarchy to the Division Manager HSM and Finishing. The individual will work with the bargaining unit crews and supervision to implement and evaluate operating strategies. They will also look at the execution of operating practices and evaluate their impact on the process. The Operations Technology Engineer requires a high level of initiative, curiosity, and persistence for the successful fulfillment of these tasks. This position also requires a willingness to work "on the floor" in an Industrial Steel Plant environment.

Some of the main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Review of all current standard operating procedures in each area of the process. Compare each procedure to "Best in Class" worldwide. Facilitate changes to those standard operating procedures. Conduct training to ensure understanding and successful implementation of the enhanced procedures.

  • Work on various continuous improvement processes and projects for overall process improvement (eg. Improved yield, increased productivity, AHSS development, meeting customer requirements, etc.). Also, initiate, develop, and maintain Performance Improvement Action Plans related to continuous process improvement and tracking of management gains.

  • Lead and/or participate in the implementation of daily management Key Performance Indicators (KPI's), assist in achieving those targets, track performance, and benchmark. Be able to report KPI performance in ArcelorMittal's Global Technical Benchmarking (GTB) System as required.

  • Participate in the implementation of equipment upgrades, CAPEX projects, and equipment commissioning.

  • Lead cross functional teams in the development of capital project requests, justifications, and Investment File development.

  • Participate in asset risk management activities for the Rolling Divisions.

  • Assist Global R&D in the development and testing of new systems and models (eg. R2 camera, COGNEX automation, gauge-hashing prevention, welder recipe development, etc.).

  • Participate in, present at, and lead (as necessary) Rolling Division technology meetings, roundtables, and KMPs.

  • Support HSM and Finishing outages and startups as necessary.

Note: Some shift work and/or weekend work may be required on an ad-hoc basis.

Minimum/Basic Requirements:

Bachelor

  • Technical or Equivalent.
  • 5 years experience in operations, maintenance or technology related to the General Steel production process

  • Proven experience to access, record, and analyze information on a computer.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Requirements:

Bachelor Engineering Electrical

  • 3+ years experience in operations, maintenance or technology related to the Rolling Division(s) processes

  • Formal Project Management Training and experience.

  • Experience in testing equipment, calibration procedures, and QS certification.

  • Exposure to coil-joining equipment (i.e. welders), Automated Surface Inspection Systems, and Technical Drawings

  • Knowledge of Level 1 control and in/output sensors

Job Description: * Will lead Advanced High Strength Steel development trials at the plant level as the Project Leader of Product Development. This includes trial planning, coordinating, tracking, monitoring, and analysis. * Will participate on cross-functional product development teams. * Will monitor and evaluate trial material to determine suitability for use and success of trials. * Will conduct the investigation, analysis, and improvement of metallurgical defects found through internal inspection or customer claims. Institute permanent corrective actions or process improvements as necessary. * Will conduct periodic statistical studies or other projects related to product development and product / process capability improvement. * Will contribute to cross-functional or cross-plant product improvement teams as required. * Will support and backfill for finishing product metallurgists (cold roll or coated) as needed. * Will represent ArcelorMittal during customer visits to our plant, or at the customer's plant related to product development. * The position may require occasional off shift work to monitor trials. Minimum/Basic Requirements: Bachelor of Science in Engineering discipline of Metallurgy or Materials Science o 3 years' experience with coated (Galvanized/Galvannealed) steel products o Computer literate - comfortable using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Access) and with learning company and plant specific computer systems and applications. o 2-3 years' experience in a team environment and supporting team members. o Strong communication skills are essential. Preferred Requirements: Master's degree in Engineering discipline - Metallurgy or Materials Science o 5 years' experience with coated and / or cold rolled steel for automotive applications. o Should have experience with TS 16949:2002, or a similar quality standard. o 2 years product development or product application experience. o Formal project management training.
