Xcel Energy is searching for a Senior Engineer in Performance Testing and Analysis. The position is based in Amarillo, TX. Preference will be given to candidates with Power Plant Performance Testing Experience. This position may be filled at the Principal Engineer level, depending on experience.


Under general direction, demonstrates complete understanding and wide application of engineering technical principles, theories and concepts in the field. Independently determines and develops approaches to solutions. Directs and performs major equipment testing and provides test related regional recommendations for major equipment modifications to improve operations and maintenance processes. Receives technical guidance on complex problems; completed work reviewed for adequacy in meeting objectives. Represents the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects. Demonstrates a broad knowledge and proficiency in the specialty area, good knowledge of related specialties and general knowledge of other related disciplines.


  • Coordinates performance tests on generating units. Responsibilities include initial contact with the plant, identifying their needs, scheduling the test with the plant, energy markets and the performance testing team. Coordinating responsibilities include directing all details of the performance test setup, the test and the teardown. All activities are designed to ensure that the test is completed on schedule, meets Commercial Operations and the plant's requirements, and is reported accurately.

  • Develops mathematical and computer models for plant equipment testing and small generating unit tests to accurately calculate test results.

  • Coordinates with the Monitoring and Diagnostic (M&D) center for identifying and correcting operational problems as they arise within the assigned region.

  • Coordinates the Independent Power Producer Facilities (IPPF) testing program and is accountable for the quality of all completed tests and associated documents.

  • Works under the general direction of a higher level engineer or supervisor for routine engineering projects. Provide ongoing technical support for project activities within areas such as Operations, Maintenance, testing/diagnostics and Regulatory. May provide field engineering oversight and/or direction for activities such as commissioning, testing, inspections, etc.

  • Uses and applies technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques to perform activities/assignments that may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials or methods and difficult coordination requirements.

  • May assign tasks and coordinate work of interns, drafters, technicians, craft personnel and/or others. Provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers. Responsible for continuous self-development of technical skills and competencies.

  • Performs activities such as budgeting, estimating, forecasting, accounting, work order management, in support of engineering projects.

Senior Engineer Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from ABET accredited curriculum (or recognized equivalency)

  • 5+ years relevant engineering experience

  • EIT/FE (Engineer in Training/Fundamentals of Engineering) required

  • Ability to demonstrate the unique technical skills and core competencies for this engineering level established and documented by the organization.

Senior Engineer Preferred Requirements

  • PE (Professional Engineer) registration may be required depending on business need

  • Experience in Power Plant Performance Testing

Principal Engineer Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from ABET accredited curriculum (or recognized equivalency)

  • 9+ years relevant engineering experience

  • PE (Professional Engineer) registration required

  • Ability to demonstrate the unique technical skills and core competencies for this engineering level established and documented by the organization.

Principal Engineer Preferred

  • Experience in Power Plant Performance Testing

This position also installs and repairs industrial and commercial refrigerating systems JOB RESPONSIBILITIES * Perform duties by following the Company's safety standards. * Use hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding equipment, drill press and jacks and hoists. * Raise trucks and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists. * Immediately communicate problems with Supervisor. * Obey traffic laws and follow established traffic and transportation procedures.Perform duties by following the Company's safety standards. * Troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical problems. * Repair delivery equipment, tractors, trailers, bobtails and passenger vehicles or any piece of equipment used for the delivery and unloading of merchandise. * Document repairs. * Inspect and maintain vehicle supplies and equipment. * Maintain refrigeration system. JOB QUALIFICATIONS * Minimum two years related mechanic experience/and or training required * Minimum two years Thermo King or Carrier refrigeration experience/and or training required * EPA 608 & R-12 licenses or ability to obtain licenses. * Must be able to troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical problems. * Must be able to communicate with supervisors and shop associates. * Must be able to follow instructions and be a self starter. * Must be capable of working independently with a minimum amount of supervision. * Must be willing to work odd hours and shift work (nights). * Material handling equipment experience is a plus since a fork lift is used on occasion.
