The Role:

Our premier legal team is comprised of over 70 individuals, including approximately 40 full-time attorneys. We are seeking a senior education law attorney to join our team to provide comprehensive education law advice and compliance assistance for The Wonderful Company's four "Flagship" education-related programs: Wonderful College Prep Academy (consisting of two public charter schools based in the Central Valley of California), company-owned and operated Pre-Schools, a robust and comprehensive College Scholarship Program, and our company-sponsored and facilitated Agricultural Preparatory Education Program. Here's what you'll do:

  • Provide legal advice and guidance on California education law, including student disciplinary matters, education-specific employment matters, special education, Brown Act and board governance, charter law and authorization, and student privacy and safety.

  • Advise on, develop and deliver training and compliance tools on topics including, but not limited to, effective workplace investigations, employee and student discipline, mandated reporter/child abuse, special education, Section 504, board governance, Brown Act, and conflict of interest laws.

  • Provide support for and attend charter school board meetings. Act as board secretary and prepare board agendas and meeting minutes. Provide legal counsel to ensure compliance with the Brown Act and Political Reform Act, board meeting legal compliance, conflict of interest law compliance and ongoing compliance with laws applicable to nonprofit entities.

  • Assist in the preparation of charter petitions, renewals, material revisions, and appeals, and negotiate memoranda of understanding with charter school authorizers.

  • Stay current on relevant laws and regulations, be a subject matter expert on California education law, and provide legal updates and policy recommendations on legal developments in California education and charter school law.

  • Advise on, develop, and implement school policies and procedures.

  • Coordinate on various legal matters with, and on behalf of, The Wonderful Company's "Education Team" (outside of the Charter School setting) regarding its company-owned and operated Pre-Schools, its College Scholarship Program, and its company-sponsored and facilitated Agricultural Preparatory Education Program ("AgPrep") where The Wonderful Company partners with many Central Valley-based high schools, colleges, and other agriculture industry participants to foster tuition-free agriculture-focused career opportunities for thousands of Central Valley-based students.

  • Minimum 10 years of experience as an education lawyer (with a least 5 years practicing in California); Ability to quickly identify risks, provide concise, effective and practical solutions, and demonstrate excellent judgment.

  • Ability to collaborate and build relationships with a wide variety of company stakeholders.

  • Subject matter expert on California education law; member of the California Bar.

Learn more about this agency Responsibilities The Office of the Division Counsel (Large Business and International) (LB&I) provides legal services to the LB&I Operating Division on tax matters that involve corporations, subchapter S corporations, partnerships and individuals with substantial assets and complicated legal and accounting issues, in the context of an expanding global environment. The incumbent of this position serves as a legal expert on matters under the jurisdiction of the Office of the Division Counsel (LB&I), acting as consultant to the Division Counsel, Division Counsel Deputies, Area Counsels, and other designated Division Counsel managers. As such, the incumbent performs a variety of duties that involve case or project work for which the incumbent is personally, and often solely, responsible. This work may include complex litigation as well as research, advice, analysis, and review. The incumbent may serve as the lead attorney or as a team member for litigation. As a Senior Counsel the incumbent of this position: * Responsible for technical written legal advice on some of the Office's most complex, important, or novel trial/case/project assignments, particularly those with broad impact or potentially controversial ramifications. Provides legal services and strategies on tax matters that involve corporations, subchapter S corporations, partnerships, and individuals with substantial assets and complicated legal and accounting issues in the context of an expanding global environment. As delegated by the manager, plans, develops, and completes complex legal work products without review and provides technical guidance and review of staff work products. Ensures such products adhere to the Office's policies and procedures. * Serves as lead attorney or team member with responsibility for all facets of litigation before the United States Tax Court. This responsibility includes the development and trial of docketed cases including discovery, pretrial motions, stipulations of fact, trial, trial memoranda, and briefs or the review thereof. Works with Department of Justice on complex refund litigation and other litigation matters. * Uses knowledge of the United States Tax Court Rules of Practice and Procedure and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure related to Discovery and e-Discovery to litigate effectively cases in the United States Tax Court. This includes using litigation technology database review tools to organize, analyze, and retrieve case data for discovery and trial preparation and using trial litigation software to litigate cases. * Exercises signatory authority on own work and work of others, under the relevant delegated authority. Applies a high level of sophisticated analysis and research to identify and assess approaches. Makes recommendations on behalf of the Office to executives and managers.
