The Senior Director, Sustainability will be responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive sustainability and ESG strategies that align with existing corporate values and goals. You will be the subject matter expert within the organization and work with a cross-functional team to develop and report ESG KPIs and use them to drive incremental improvement to these metrics for both operational facilities and new developments.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and articulate a clear vision and roadmap for sustainability and ESG initiatives within the organization.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to integrate sustainability and ESG principles into the overall business strategy and decision-making processes.
  • Lead the creation of key priorities and establish short, mid and long-term goals to drive progress.
  • Sustainability and ESG Planning and Implementation:
  • Lead the execution of comprehensive sustainability and ESG programs, policies, and initiatives across all aspects of development and operations.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption, minimize waste, optimize resource utilization, and enhance social responsibility within data center facilities.
  • Work cross functionally to drive the implementation of best practices for sustainable design, construction, and operation of new and existing data centers, with a focus on ESG considerations.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Cultivate strategic partnerships with industry peers, government agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders to advance sustainability and ESG goals and initiatives.
  • Engage with customers, investors, and the broader community to communicate the company’s commitment to sustainability and ESG principles and foster transparency and accountability.
  • Develop and implement ESG focused training programs for employees to enhance awareness and understanding throughout the organization.

Performance Monitoring and Reporting

  • Monitor and evaluate key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure the effectiveness and impact of sustainability and ESG programs.
  • Conduct and update annual greenhouse gas inventory in line with existing procedures and current guidance to provide consistent, accurate, and comprehensive emissions reporting for the company across all three scopes of emissions.
  • Develop regular reports and presentations to communicate progress, achievements, and areas for improvement to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Partner with the communications team to develop and publish annual sustainability reports and regulatory filings, in accordance with global ESG reporting standards (e.g. GRI, SASB, TCFD).

Regulatory Compliance and Advocacy

  • Stay abreast of emerging sustainability and ESG trends, regulations, and industry standards relevant to the data center sector.
  • Identify and assess ESG-related risks and opportunities for the company. Develop and implement strategies to mitigate risks and capitalize on opportunities.
  • Advocate for policies and practices that promote environmental stewardship and sustainability within the data center industry and beyond.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Business Administration, Engineering or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in sustainability and/or ESG leadership roles, with a proven track record of driving meaningful change within complex organizations.
  • Deep understanding of environmental issues, sustainability best practices, ESG frameworks, and relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to align sustainability and ESG initiatives with corporate goals and financial objectives.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and mobilize teams  toward a common vision and effective solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships with diverse stakeholders, including peers, customers, partners, regulators, advocacy groups, and investors.
  • Experience in guiding and adhering to carbon emission standards and ESG reporting frameworks such as: SBTi, CDP, GRI, The GHG Protocol, IFRS, life cycle assessments, and sustainable building certification standards.

Compensation range for the Senior Director, Sustainability is between $170,000 - $250,000 base + bonus. Location and experience will be looked at to determine compensation. The position is 100% remote with travel expected to be up to 30% in the first year.
