This Senior Director role will lead communications strategy to support Kaiser Permanente's national Growth & Affordability strategic business goals.

Responsible for providing complex communications strategy, management, consultation, planning, implementation and recommended solutions for the Kaiser Permanente organization, functions, programs and projects across a broad variety of internal and external audiences (KP leaders, employees, influencers, media, members, consumers, etc.) to support organizational business strategies and to promote and protect the KP brand.

Provides oversight and/or leads communications strategies and tactics that support the growth and market strategies essential to KP's strategic plans, revenue, membership and margin goals. Managers provide strategic thinking and leadership skills that enable teams to: identify and optimize business solutions through strategic communication leadership; evaluate findings and make formal recommendations to a number of stakeholders including up to C-level KP executives; design communications strategies that optimize KP business strategies, programs and priorities; bring forth technical/content expertise (competitive intelligence, business acumen, sophisticated communications strategies, tools and techniques); mentor/review/approve team member communications recommendations and work on a variety of topics.

Incumbents would advise and/or manage team members whose work includes strategic communications leadership, planning, and tactical implementation in both day-to-day and high-risk situations. Selects, develops, evaluates, coaches, and advises personnel.

  • Partners with senior KP leadership and serves as a business and communications adviser and strategist to senior executive(s) in support of broad-reaching enterprise-wide business goals and strategies.

  • Applies business knowledge and communications expertise to develop and lead communications strategies that advance enterprise-wide business objectives including high-risk issues and situations.

  • Develops and monitors organization/business performance metrics and acts when needed.

  • Drives communication programs and initiatives involving multiple business areas and targeting broad-based internal and external audiences.

  • Engages and coordinates across executive stakeholders and subject-matter experts to ensure strategic business objectives are supported through integrated communications programs that represent stakeholder perspectives and meet business needs.

  • Serves as liaison with other national business units (e.g., Government Relations, Labor Relations, Legal, Compliance) to develop communications strategies and tactics that meet necessary regulations and requirements to effectively promote and protect the organization's reputation.

  • Sets and effectively manages communications program budgets.

  • Develops scope of work for enterprise wide projects, sequencing, defining value proposition, setting strategic direction & priorities for the team.

  • Provides oversight, coaching and guidance to management-level staff including managers and director levels not necessarily under their direct responsibility.

  • Acts as member of PR and Communications leadership team to contribute to overall department strategy and performance.

  • Serves as backup to the PR/Comms VP.

  • Determines and establishes organizational structures and supervisory relationships, subject to executive management approval.

  • Has budget responsibility.

Basic Qualifications:


Minimum twelve (12) years of experience in PR, Communications or similar roles.

Minimum four (4) years of management experience.


Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, public relations, business administration or related field, OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.

High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

License, Certification, Registration


Additional Requirements:

Extenstive experience providing advice and counsel to C-level senior executives and managing / advising on confidential, high-risk and/or highly sensitive content.

Advanced knowledge (broad expertise or unique knowledge) of communications and stakeholder policies, practices and systems.

Develops advanced communications techniques, and standards.

Develops new communications applications based on professional principles and theories.

Applies advanced principles, theories, and concepts.

Contributes to the development of innovative principles and ideas.

Demonstrated ability to plan and manage complex projects: ability to work effectively

with team members and C-level senior executives under tight deadlines.

Viewed as a communications expert within the industry.

Superior skills in the areas outlined under manager/senior manager.

Preferred Qualifications:

Seven (7) years of management experience preferred.

Master's degree preferred.

In addition, this position will help coordinate US Medical Affairs activities and relationships with key global, national, and regional thought leaders and stakeholders. Job Responsibilities Key responsibilities may include the following: * Participate in the strategic and tactical development and execution of the Global and US Publication Plans for rucaparib and pipeline products. * Participate in Publication Team Meetings with cross-functional and cross-regional internal stakeholders; provide publication status/progress reports to the Global Publication Team. * Interact with key investigators, external and internal authors, and other external and internal stakeholders. * Partner with medical writing/editorial agencies to develop/manage publication timelines. * Participate in and coordinate the drafting, review, and approval of publications, including abstracts, posters, oral presentations, primary and secondary manuscripts, review articles, editorials, and other peer-reviewed journal articles. * Assist in the development and review of materials for advisory board meetings and similar forums for HCPs/investigators/thought leaders in the US and EU in collaboration with key internal stakeholders. * Provide support at key scientific congresses and meetings (e.g., writing of daily reports; hang posters; assist with slides and preparation of oral presentation; assist with Advisory Board Meeting minutes). * Maintain publication database.
