Job Description

Senior Director, Strategic Sourcing and Supplier Management, Contracting

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Sr. Director, Contracting is accountable for the processes, systems, and strategies utilized in the negotiation and execution of contracts with contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs) and direct material suppliers (CDAs, MSAs, SOWs, Amendments, etc.) This includes ownership of the processes and systems used for identifying a contracting need, establishment of a contracting strategy and boundaries for key terms, negotiation of terms, and final approval/execution of contracts. This position will have accountability for ensuring contracts with CDMOs and direct material suppliers have terms and conditions which meet Gilead's long-term business needs and optimize both cost and flexibility. The levers and positions negotiated both directly and indirectly by this role will impact hundreds of millions of dollars in annual spending. We are seeking a high energy, "go- getter" who will use their business savvy and negotiation skills to establish robust processes/systems and achieve the best terms for Gilead in our partner contracts. This position will be based at our Foster City site Gilead site and is eligible for the Gilead GFlex program allowing remote work up to 2 days per week.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Responsible for defining and executing contracting strategies for service and material suppliers of APIs, spray dry dispersions, oral solid dosages, biologics, sterile drug products, and/or secondary packaging services as well as suppliers of direct materials.

  • Responsible for driving strategic alignment by creating processes that leverage insights, share best practices, and develop a culture of open and transparent communication and continuous improvement

  • Foster "win-win" collaborations with strategic partners by understanding partner needs and perspectives and having a point of view on relevant CDMO landscapes and industry trends

  • Serve as the resident SME for contracting and negotiation

  • Lead contracting negotiations for high value contracts with strategic partners as assigned (Confidentiality Agreements, Master Services Agreements, Work Orders, etc.)

  • Mentor and support other team members/functions in contracting strategy development and negotiations

  • Develop and oversee group training plans to enhance contract development and negotiation skills within SSSM

  • Develop budgets and accurately report accruals to Finance if/as needed

  • Lead innovative approaches to contracting that challenge the status quo and deliver shared and incremental benefits to both Gilead and it's partners

  • Support product team needs for the selection of external service and/or material suppliers to provide required services and/or supplies from development through commercialization

  • Stay informed and knowledgeable of relevant development and commercial CDMO and material supplier capabilities, offerings, capacities, etc. as they relate to potential or known Gilead pipeline needs

  • Lead engagement across functions to establish and ensure quality and technical execution expectations are appropriately defined and included in relevant contracts

  • Collaborate and establish regular meetings with key stakeholders and partners to ensure contracting needs are understood and met

  • Organize and participate in teleconferences and face-to-face meetings regarding contracting and/or processes/systems with CMOs and/or direct material suppliers

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to align on negotiation of key business terms in contracts with CDMOs and direct material suppliers

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 14+ years of experience in a pharmaceutical/biotech organization or relevant manufacturing environment and a BA or BS degree; an MA/MBA degree may be considered as 2 years of relevant experience and Ph.D. may be consider as 4 years' experience.

  • Extensive experience negotiating complex contracts/agreements

  • Expert negotiator with a bias for "win-win" outcomes

  • Prior experience in business management of outsourced development and manufacturing service providers and/or direct material suppliers

  • Strong computer skills and experience with document management systems

  • Understanding of activities related to the CMC development of biopharmaceuticals

  • Knowledge of relevant GMPs and associated regulations (21CFR parts 11, 210, 211, 820)

  • Ability to lead cross functional teams

  • Strong people management skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to manage multiple programs/projects; sound organizational and time management skills

  • Ability to develop concise presentations to convey complex issues to senior management

  • Ability to work under uncertainty and to resolve conflict in a constructive manner

  • Ability to solve highly complex problems through ingenuity and collaboration with subject matter experts and other key stakeholders

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • This position may require up to 20% domestic and/or international travel

The salary range for this position is: $237,660.00 - $307,560.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
