The Opportunity:

As Senior Director of Product, the ideal candidate for this role will have a passion for product excellence, experience in the digital payments industry and a strong background developing e-commerce products.

The successful candidate will be adept at working with global payment providers, analyzing key business metrics, operationalizing key payments and licensing related processes , optimizing check-out processes and global payments strategy. Our commerce and licensing product and operations are at the core of our business.

This candidate will work with a team of product managers and report to the head of product.

In order to be successful, this candidate must be well versed in agile development methodologies and comfortable leading product strategy for a cross-functional team of engineers and designers.

The ideal candidate possess strong communication skills, is comfortable collaborating with cross-functional groups, has a strong bias for action and knows how to function as a motivated self-starter in a high paced environment.


  • Carry the torch on the product strategy and be the advocate of the customer in creating a best in class digital experience

  • Develop the overall product roadmap working with a small team of product managers.

  • Drive product development through the entire development cycle, from conceptualization, design and development, through to launch and ongoing support in a fast-paced, agile environment

  • Work with our engineering teams to evolve our software and systems architecture to support a rapidly growing customer base across multiple countries and languages

  • Interface with teams across the entire company including other product teams, marketing, public relations, security / risk operations, accounting, finance, legal, and the executive team

  • Convert strategy work into actionable projects that can be tested, deployed and measured

  • Prepare the future of our commerce platform, creating flexibility for the business and enabling to drive our common goals.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years agile product management experience

  • 5+ years of e-commerce experience.

  • Demonstrated analytical and quantitative skills, ability to use hard data and metrics to back up assumptions

  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with teams across organizations

  • Strong understanding of current technologies and standards, and how the digital ecosystem is evolving

  • Results-oriented and self-motivated with the ability to take charge or play a supporting role

  • Demonstrated ability to collect user feedback and understand customer pain points

  • Enthusiasm for working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with payments platforms and e-commerce

  • Ability to clearly communicate data insights to others

  • Experience managing and leading a team to meet aggressive goals

  • Experience in pricing and price testing

  • Ability to synthesize different points of view and present them as a unified plan

  • Ability to dive deep into the product, the business, and the competition

  • Empathy for our users and an entrepreneurial approach to problem-solving

  • Product development experience in non-U.S markets a plus

  • Inspire action in diverse groups

VIEW JOBS 1/6/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-04-06T00:00 Job Description The New York Times is seeking a Product Manager to lead all technical and product decisions for its emerging Commerce business, which includes online businesses such as The New York Times Store (retail), Times Journeys (travel), Wine Club, Licensing and other operations. Working closely with our internal Design and the broader Operations teams, this role will help ensure that we represent the Times brand and mission in all digital interactions, providing an industry-leading user experience that helps us delight our readers and fans while driving real ROI and potentially subscriptions. This role requires a multitalented individual. We are seeking individuals who not only have a track record of helping build and shape great products, but who are also eager to build executive-level skills not often available at this level. This includes budget oversight, negotiations with vendors, as well as legal and security reviews of apps. The Commerce team is a small, startup-like venture within the broader Marketing team at The Times, and everyone on the team brings operational expertise and a scrappy, get-it-done mentality. We set our own priorities and are able to move very fast in launching new products and features, sometimes within the same day. You will be spending the vast majority of time developing digital products and features for Times Journeys and The Times Store. The ideal candidate will have familiarity with all current fundamentals of web and mobile design as well as experience managing complex product roadmaps, integrations with third-party booking and payment systems and data compliance. We are looking for individuals who have a clear product vision and knack for building great UX, are data savvy, wildly productive, and have a positive, upbeat attitude. An open mind and ability to work well with others are mandatory requirements. What You'll Do * Develop product strategy and roadmap in Commerce's portfolio based on stakeholders requirements, particularly a relaunch of the Times Journeys website and continued enhancements to The New York Times Store. Other projects will arise based on interest and bandwidth * Ensure all analytics and conversion flows (including cross-domain tracking) are set up and capturing data accurately. When necessary, own and troubleshoot any discrepancies * Document all requirements into detailed Jira/Asana user stories for development teams to build features * Develop UX that combines form and function, with a critical eye towards driving ROI while delighting our readers and users * Collaborate with multiple development teams and third party vendors to deliver features based on roadmaps * Work with team directors to create and manage a budget for technology investment, including capital expense requests and third party software such as Shopify, Wordpress, and related apps * Quality assure testing of all features prior to release along with the team * Meet weekly with staff, vendors and development teams to ensure delivery of features within desired timeframe and articulate any delays or change in requirements * Provide technical expertise on software, third-party integrations and internal NYT integrations * Liaise on behalf of the Commerce team with The Times security, infrastructure, and compliance teams for a secure Commerce portfolio * As a data steward, keep informed of any changes in policies for GDPR, CASL and other data compliance requirements and assist on managing vendor assessments * Utilize multiple communication channels to ensure stakeholders and teams are inform about the status of features, releases and changes in policies * Collaborate with legal and stakeholders on development and technical contracts * If interested, take part in merchandise and product creation Who You Are * 5+ years of operational product experience, as either a Product Manager or Project Manager * Exceptionally strong organizational skills * Fluent in Agile Product and Project Management (eg, Scrum certification) * Deep experience with Jira, Excel, Google Docs and ability to * Basic to Intermediate knowledge of frontend and backend development, including basic codind experience (HTML, CSS, JS) * Ability to understand complex technical requirements at a deep enough level to problem solve, such as ensuring ongoing SSL and GDPR compliance * A track record of buidling simlpe, effective and beautiful UX that reflects the brand ethos and mission of The Times * Ability to articulate user needs in clear manner to the technology team * Ability to provide honest, actionable design and UX feedback in a constructive manner * Enthusiasm – for designing and making great products and experiences, for current events and The New York Times – is critical * Excitement about working outside your comfort zone * Unafraid to learn new things to take on a problem * Ability to lead meetings and projects that involve more senior level colleagues * Appetite to move fast and get things done! * Experience working with Shopify, WordPress VIP, Amazon Sellers, or other emerging ecommerce platforms will differentiate candidates.
