Job Summary:

The Senior Director of Learning and Development (L&D) is responsible for the strategy, development, implementation and measurable success of a comprehensive L&D program that supports employee learning and development as well as SWK's overall strategy and goals. The Senior Director of L&D manages a core staff of Regional and HQ L&D employees (15+ FTEs). The Senior Director of L&D is also responsible for partnering with program leadership to manage and oversee the performance of 90+ Trainers who support SWK's programs. Critical functions include but are not limited to the development and deployment of national and regional trainings for SWK employees (a workforce of 6,000-8,000 employees), the selection and management of SWK's LMS, creating, tracking and reporting on measurements of success and related analytics for all training initiatives and L&D goals and objectives, the planning and coordination of all training, tracking and reporting on compliance-related training requirements, the development of annual and quarterly training calendars for all lines of services within SWK, ensuring that L&D's HQ and regional processes, programs and communication plans are managed effectively. Serve as a strategic partner with senior leadership across SWK's organization to ensure the training and development needs of SWK's employees are met. This position is responsible for developing and managing the L&D annual multi-million dollar budget. Programming should include a L&D roadmap that is aligned with short and long-term measurable business objectives. Responsibilities also include creating and engaging, educational and effective learning experiences for all levels of employees in the SWK workforce. This individual will lead the L&D team to assess employee skills, drive employee development, implement training policies and procedures, and evaluate results. This role will monitor, comply with, and address all requirements from federal, state and local governing bodies inclusive of licensing entities and funding sources. This position will be national in scope and will require frequent interstate travel and communication with regional teams.

Essential Functions:

  • Under the leadership of the AVP of Human Resources, oversee the development and implementation of employee training and learning functions within the organization including in-person training, on-line, coaching, and experience-based learning opportunities

  • Manage L&D's budget as well as partner with program leadership to co-manage L&D budget items within program budgets.

  • Work with executive leadership to identify performance needs and gaps in order to direct the design and execution of learning and development strategies across the organization.

  • Utilize a variety of analytic methods to provide insight into L&D strategies, learning gaps and desired results that tie directly into SWK's overall strategic goals and priorities.

  • Establish clear, measurable goals for all L&D programs and report on progress toward achieving established goals.

  • Conduct business and technical briefings for senior and top management to ensure learning and development supports the strategic plan for the organization.

  • Develop a learning strategy and an annual learning plan in collaboration with program leadership and the AVP of HR.

  • Plan corporate strategic learning initiatives, including the development of learning academies and other professional development outlets.

  • Collaborate with operations team members to design and implement a continuous improvement training strategy. As part of this collaboration, define and implement a comprehensive measurement strategy to assess the effectiveness of all learning interventions, including trainer performance and skill-building.

  • Oversee the Austin HQ and regional L&D teams, including learning professionals, course designers, vendor partners, and project teams. Establish an innovative, challenging, motivating and collaborative work environment. Build a high performing culture where team members can demonstrate their best abilities. Develop a successful team that is positioned as a credible, proactive and trusted team that delivers results and builds effective and strategic partnerships at all levels within the organization.

  • Manage and improve the delivery, facilitation and impact (as measured by the growth and skill development of employees) of training conducted by Program Trainers. Develop measurements of success for all Program Trainers as well as a coaching and training plans to support their growth and development.

  • Leverage workforce analytics to identify talent development strategies

  • Determine appropriate blend of adult learning methodologies, including in-person and web-based training required to create and deliver best-in-class learning programs.

  • Oversee vendor management and program governance for sourcing high-quality vendors.

  • Seek and build partnership opportunities to implement, and continuously improve, learning and talent development tools and processes.

  • Manage all training requests for SWK leadership.

  • Assist the AVP HR in structuring the leadership development program and succession planning efforts of the organization.

  • Provide insight and recommend best practice tools, technology and learning systems to expand the reach and effectiveness of training curricula.

  • Oversee the development of training curriculum and content, leveraging expertise in instructional design and learning technologies, products and services.

  • Conduct trainings and workshops to staff, instructors and supervisors in skills and techniques that are specific to their job function as needed.

Other Functions:

  • Report on the progress of initiatives and program metrics as required.

  • Lead special training project teams and taskforce groups and works independently to oversee multiple projects simultaneously and be responsible for contributing to and proposing/developing business strategies.

  • Use creativity and innovation in program development and service delivery.

  • Proactively stay up to date on trends, best practices, and education.

  • React to change productively and handle other essential tasks as necessary and assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • A minimum of ten years of leadership and/or learning and development experience in a nonprofit, government, or philanthropy, overseeing multiple programs or contracts ideally at an organization serving low-income youth or communities for a large, diverse and dispersed workforce.

  • Demonstrated outcomes serving in a training and development, instructional design, or closely related field.

  • Experience with current L&D trends, tech-forward approaches, and agile methodologies.

  • Able to develop and implement learning surveys and evaluations interpret results and report on program effectiveness.

  • Passion for SWK's mission and purpose and an ability to communicate this passion to others.

  • Demonstrated experience building a high-performing team in a multi-site structure

  • Master's degree preferred. Bachelor's degree minimum and relevant formal academic/vocational qualification.

  • Certifications in leadership training models, and other learning modalities, desired.

  • Expert knowledge of learner-centric instructional design and learning technologies, as well as adult learning principles.

  • Proven understanding of HR principles and application of policy and procedures. HR Certification desired.

  • Proven expertise in the application of project and personnel management principles, including the ability to effectively manage multiple projects and staff members simultaneously.

  • Highly skilled with design and delivery of learning programs.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with employees at all levels of the organization.

  • A demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace.

  • Expert financial acumen including budgeting and resource management.

  • Superior oral/written communication skills and training content facilitation experience.

  • Ability to successfully navigate in a fast-paced, outcomes-driven and entrepreneurial environment.

  • Well-organized and self-motivated and strong attention to detail.

Physical Demands:

Must be able to read, write, and communicate both verbally and in written form to express and exchange ideas. While performing the responsibilities of this job, the employee must be able to access all components of workstation and other office equipment. Frequent typing, writing, bending twisting walking and standing. Must be able to lift to 10 pounds.

Work Environment:

General office environment with moderate noise. This position may involve standing while facilitating training or walking distances throughout program sites. Work location(s) may vary and may include a busy environment with many unscheduled interruptions. Frequent computer use at workstation for extended periods of time. Public contact position requiring appropriate business apparel and ability to interact frequently with others.

In addition, the Faculty Development Specialist focuses on continuing to develop the FIC's Inclusive Teaching & Learning portfolio, ensuring the FIC is integrating accessible, inclusive, and equitable practices into its core programs of course design, trainings and facilitations, and assessment methods.
