The SF Marin Food Bank is comprised of a dedicated team of approximately 150 staff working collaboratively to provide close to 50 million pounds of food to over 210,000 people in the Bay Area a region where 1 in 4 people are at risk of hunger. We are currently looking for a Sr. Director of Development to lead the team in our fundraising, marketing and community engagement efforts. San Francisco-Marin Food Bank is seeking a Senior Director of Development to strategically lead the organizations broad-based annual fund, marketing and community engagement efforts, while ensuring intelligent, data-driven processes and procedures. The Senior Director will lead functional teams responsible for securing approximately $8 million of the $17.5 million budget for private funding in the current fiscal year. S/he will direct the teams responsible for Annual Fund, Digital Management, Community Engagement and Marketing Communications at the Food Bank. The Food Bank has launched a $40 million building expansion campaign. It must increase its annual operating revenue in the coming years to support an expanded operation. The Senior Director will help lead a strategic planning process to build a roadmap that ensures significant growth in operating funds as the Food Bank prepares to scale up its delivery operation.

The Senior Director leads a group of 10 Development professionals to meet the annual fund, community engagement and marketing goals of the organization.


Annual Giving

  • Leverage external resources and existing Food Bank staff and relationships to develop a strategy to scale small-gift ($1-$999) and mid-level ($1,000-$9,999) revenue over the next decade to support increasing operations in San Francisco and Marin.

  • Develop and manage the annual fund budget and work plan; oversee vendor relationships and contracts; analyze cost effectiveness of fundraising channels and staffing, and make recommendations to optimize ROI.

  • Lead the Annual Fund and Digital Fundraising t to develop and execute campaigns that increase revenue from direct mail and online channels.

  • With partner Senior Director, oversee collaboration between the Annual Fund and Leadership Gifts teams to define and develop the pipeline of donors to cultivate for increased giving; deliver campaigns to drive revenue growth from upgrades, and migrate donors to Leadership Gifts.

  • Collaborate with Leadership Gifts to build a strong sense of community among Food Bank donors of all levels, through events, recognition and other exclusive donor programs and opportunities.

  • Keep up with trends in philanthropy to keep SFMFB on the forward edge of acquiring donor support.

Marketing Communications

  • Drive strategy to ensure strong reputation and community respect for SFMFB.

  • Lead the Director of Marketing and Communications to plan and deliver public outreach initiatives and activities, including advertising and media campaigns related to fundraising efforts, a widespread public relations effort, and promoting awareness about SFMFB and its impact on ending hunger.

  • Ensure strategic approach to SFMFBs website, digital and social media activities.

Represent SFMFB in the media and at community functions as appropriate.

Community Engagement

  • Lead the Director of Community Engagement to plan and deliver strategic value to SFMFB from its extensive volunteer services program.

  • Oversee Directors partnership with HR and Operations to drive a strategic initiative to integrate service volunteers into SFMFBs business model.

  • Ensure efforts to cultivate and convert volunteers into donors.

  • Lead Community Engagement team to innovate and create new models for participation and revenue from Food and Fund Drives and Third-Party fundraising campaigns.

Administration and Staff Management

  • Set a strong vision for the team, including clear priorities, objectives and measurable goals. Oversee annual budgeting, work planning, and performance evaluations.

  • Provide professional development support and mentor individuals toward greater professional achievement.

  • Foster an environment that values and rewards collaboration, leadership, excellence, accountability, and mutual respect.


The successful professional will have or be:

  • A commitment to and enthusiasm for the mission and vision of the SF-Marin Food Bank;

  • A record of quantifiable success in fundraising, with experience leading a $5M+ annual fund or membership marketing program, and a significant track record in direct response techniques

  • A marketing and digital strategist, knowledgeable about high-visibility branding and PR;

  • A data-driven, analytically minded leader who will set clear key performance indicators and support the team to track outcomes and adjust strategy accordingly;

  • A skilled supervisor and mentor with experience managing a large team of people in a complex department with multiple functions;

  • The ability to establish and maintain an atmosphere of openness and trust;

  • A sense of humor and ability to see the humor in things, often apparent in the daily interaction with staff and colleagues;

  • Demonstrated excellence in writing and editing.

  • Ability to work under pressure;

  • Sound judgment, professionalism, a calm demeanor, and a positive attitude;

  • A strategist who is adept at planning, prioritizing, organizing and following through
