  • Compensation for this position is in the $90,000 to $95,000 range.

  • The anticipated start for this position is July 1, 2024.

  • This position is hybrid: At least 3 days/week in-person in the Philadelphia office or school-house visits to observe and support learning and training.

Position Overview:

City Year Philadelphia (CYP) is seeking a Senior Director, Learning and Instruction (SDLI) who is responsible for planning and implementing an inclusive and equitable full-year training program for the ~150 AmeriCorps Members (i.e. Student Success Coaches or SSCs) and Returning AmeriCorps Members (RACMs), serving with City Year Philadelphia. Reporting to the Managing Director, Impact (MDI), the SDLI supervises two Instructional Coaches and a Learning and Development Manager (L&D Manager). This role collaborates closely with all members of the Impact Department to create learning spaces as well as observation and coaching practices that build the skills and knowledge SSCs need to implement City Year's Whole School, Whole Child (WSWC) model to effectively reach our school and student outcome goals and to consistently strive toward equity in the Philadelphia education system.

In addition to leading this work for City Year Philadelphia's SSCs and RACMs, the SDLI partners with the Managing Director, Impact to plan and implement inclusive and equitable role-specific training for the organization's Impact Department staff. Ultimately, the SDLI strives to best answer and deliver on the same questions for both Corps and Impact staff: "What do we need to learn? Why do we need to learn it? When do we do so? How will that be accomplished?"

Job Description

Oversee City Year Philadelphia's (CYP) Annual Student Success Coach (SSC) Learning & Development (L&D) and Observation and Coaching (O&C) Programming

  • 40%
  • Develop the formal learning program for the site's ~150 18-25 year old Student Success Coaches (SSCs)

  • Work with the L&D Manager and CYP staff to oversee the execution of major and ongoing L&D Days: Senior Corps Members (SCMs) summer training, Service-Learning Institute (SLI) for all ACMs (3 weeks), and Mid-Year Summit (3 days)

  • Assess the effectiveness of the preparation for Whole School, Whole Child (WSWC) service launch and its implementation

  • Develop and work with the L&D Manager and Impact Team to oversee and facilitate the execution of L&D Days throughout the school year that further prepare CYP SSCs to serve in schools, on teams, for their life/leadership after City Year

  • Develop and oversee expectations of SSC coaching scope and sequence that is implemented by Instructional Coaches

  • Oversee the L&D Manager in their implementation of the Returning AmeriCorps Member (RACM) training and experience program

  • Create content for Impact Manager (IM) and Team Leader (TL)-led team level training to support a continuous L&D experience in the schoolhouse

  • Develop, oversee and partner with the Instructional Coaches the Academic Academy training for SSCs and Impact Staff

  • Engage external and school district partners to support the corps and Impact staff learning experience, ensuring we have multiple perspectives and experiences as facilitators, and experts in various fields

Impact Department and Site Leadership

  • 20%
  • Serve as a member of the Impact department's leadership team, collaborating broadly on the department's overall strategy

  • Support strategic department initiatives including the Impact Cycle and Site Advancement Plan (SAP)

  • Support planning and execution of Impact Department and leadership meetings

  • Build, manage, and forecast yearlong L&D and Instructional budget, that supports the L&D vision for the corps

  • Develop in collaboration with Impact Leadership, the Impact Yearlong scope and sequence

  • Serve on the Site Leadership Team (SLT) through attendance at meetings, providing perspective for the Instructional Coaches, the department, and all manager level staff in decision making.

  • Serve as a role model, listener, perspective provider, for site staff along with other SLT members.

Manage the Learning and Instructional Team

  • 20%
  • Manage and develop the L&D Manager in leading the executing CYP's overall learning strategy

  • Create consistent spaces of coaching and feedback through weekly check-ins and observation and coaching of the L&D Manager's general duties

  • Manage and develop Instructional Coaches in supporting the site in implementation of the academic strategy and model

  • Support and observe Instructional Coaches in observation practices and feedback facilitation

  • Oversee L&D Manager feedback loop that improves and enhances the corps and staff experience for learning and development trainings throughout the year

Oversee Student Engagement Service Model and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) - 15%

  • Collaborate with the Analytics Director and Impact Directors to align SEL service model pacing plan for multiple corps start dates

  • Create and facilitate SEL content for L&D days and IM-led team meetings

  • Engage external facilitators and organizations to support SEL/mentoring service model and stay current with best mentoring practices

  • Maintain relationships with School District of Philadelphia (SDP) partners and City Year Headquarters (HQ) to align with updated SEL strategies/approach

  • Plan, message, and manage SEL progress monitoring and Report Card Conferences

Organizational Initiatives and Site Support

  • 5%
  • Serve as a member of the City Year Site Leadership Team (SLT), providing strategic insight into site priorities

  • Engage in structured discussion and training on diversity, belonging, inclusivity, and equity aimed at developing stronger cultural competency, both individually and collectively as a site

  • Participate in relevant network-wide meetings and calls; provide insight, feedback, and collective problem solving

  • Serve as a consultant with People and Operations Department to align professional development efforts across departments

  • Partner with City Year Philadelphia's departments and staff to ensure that site-wide goals are met, including, but not limited to, the AmeriCorps Member applicant interview process, staff interviews, stakeholder engagement, event and service day participation, and cross-departmental committees

  • Attend overnight conferences as needed

  • Participate in site-wide events throughout the year, including Back to School Block Party, MLK Day, Red Jacket Gala, and Graduation

  • Additional responsibilities as needed, including department or site-wide special projects

Skills, Knowledge, and Experiences:

  • 6+ years of relevant professional experience leading adult learning, informed by promising practices in adult learning and social emotional learning principles

  • Bachelor's Degree or 2 additional years of experience

  • Deep knowledge of instructional strategy, with a focused understanding of intervention for students performing below grade level

  • Knowledge of large urban education systems serving predominantly Black and Brown students and communities, experience working in a school setting a plus

  • Comfort with leading and facilitating in both large and small group settings

  • Strong ability/initiative to work independently and collaborate with folks with diverse needs, expectations, and perspectives, including those not in direct line of authority

  • Proven track record of building highly effective teams and coaching to exceed goals through the delivery of high-impact service

  • Proven project management skills; ability to deliver strong, measurable results

  • Effective systems builder and developer of process and protocols, ability to socialize tools for department and site

  • Ability to translate an organization or department's vision into an operating plan, effectively communicate that plan and timeline to collaborators, establish goals for accountability, and monitor performance

  • Track record of anticipating challenges, securing resources to meet needs, linking decisions to their potential benefits and consequences, and seeking guidance and input through the planning or change process
