SUMMARY:

A Senior Director who will lead the medicinal chemistry team at Epizyme. The successful candidate will provide expertise and experience to the team while serving as an integral contributor to discovery projects. The candidate will have a track record of successfully moving compounds from screening through to the clinic. The candidate will have in depth experience leveraging CRO-based chemistry teams to surmount complex research problems and facilitate the achievement of key corporate goals - on time and on budget. The role will require a demonstrated history of mentorship and a record of building strong partnerships with all areas of the Research organization. An ability to integrate a wide range of data and to make appropriate, timely decisions is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to the in-house chemistry team

  • Ensure implementation of medicinal chemistry strategies addressing critical project issues

  • Collaborate as part of an integrated, cross functional program team towards the advancement of high quality drug candidates into clinical development

  • Provide strategic and tactical direction of the chemistry group

  • Responsible for communicating functional updates to the management team

  • Develop and execute patent filing strategies

  • Develop budgets to ensure success of medicinal chemistry goals

  • Responsible for the partnership with Pharmaceutical Science team to ensure smooth transition into Development

Requirements

  • Deep understanding of synthetic and medicinal chemistry, as evidenced by a record of achievement (publications, patents, etc.)

  • PhD in Organic Chemistry

  • 10+ years-experience in a Biotech and/or Pharmaceutical environment

  • A proven manager who has hired, trained, motivated, facilitated and led teams in a manner that has positively impacted results, culture and strategic direction

  • Expert in small molecule drug discovery with experience from hit ID to nomination of clinical candidates

  • Experience leveraging cheminformatics analysis packages, computational chemistry approaches and the integration of structure-based-drug design principles.

  • Experience designing and building targeted screening small-molecule libraries.

  • Experience with the application of fragment based drug discovery

  • Previous project leadership experience required.

  • Proven track record for delivery of pre-clinical candidates

  • Extensive experience working with CRO chemistry teams

  • Experience evaluating external organizations and conducting due diligence visits

  • Experience working with Pharmaceutical Science teams

  • Excellent analytical, organizational and communication skills are essential

  • Experience in epigenetics and oncology a strong plus
