Senior DevOps Engineer, Kafka

Location: San Francisco, CA

Sony Interactive Entertainment is looking for a talented Senior DevOps Engineer to join its Cloud Data team and demonstrate leadership and excellence in highly available distributed stream-processing platforms. These services are among the most critical in the company and are serving real-time data to millions of customers.

The ideal candidate should be passionate about stream-processing frameworks such as Kafka or AWS Kinesis, with skills in data transformation (ETL) and the platforms that support that (Spark) being desirable. Our goal is to support the needs of our developers and to improve the resiliency and performance of these platforms. Your role is to operate messaging systems powered by Kafka that handle several billions of events per day.


  • Responsible for auto scaling, resiliency, and availability of data processing solutions (Kafka + Zookeeper) with an uptime of 99.99%.

  • Provide support and advice to developers when asked about messaging or stream-processing problems.

  • Enhance or create automation to ensure repeatable deployment of these systems.

  • Proactively manage cluster data loads and forecast capacity requirements.

Education Details:

  • BS/MS CS/CSE or equivalent

Key Requirements:

  • Experience with operating Kafka & Zookeeper. Experience implementing best practices and optimization of same.

  • Good understanding of scripting and high level languages.

  • Experience building high-volume, highly-available messaging clusters using Kafka and Zookeeper (active/active, active/passive, or stretch clusters).

  • The ability and mindset to automate away routine tasks (using Python, Bash scripting, or GoLang).

Helpful Qualities:

  • Passionate about running systems at scale.

  • Practical knowledge and hands on experience with Spark and SQL

  • Knowledge of Amazon's Cloud Service (AWS) and familiarity with its interfaces

  • Experience with Git and Github

  • Familiarity with deployment tools like Chef or CloudFormation

  • Prior experience with Docker and Kubernetes

  • Working knowledge of big data systems such as Cassandra, Aerospike, and/or CouchBase

  • Driven and passionate about producing amazing software.

  • Passionate about technology and engaged in trends and changing best practices.

  • Able to work independently and well within a team.

  • Interest in designing, analyzing and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems.

  • Systematic problem-solving approach, coupled with strong communication skills and a sense of ownership and drive.
