Smashing Boxes is looking for a full-time, Raleigh-Durham based senior level DevOps/Cloud Engineer and Architect with a knack for problem solving and a love of bleeding-edge web technology. This technical leader role requires a person with a background in software development with a mix of operations.

Candidate must have experience building, shipping and operating at least one software-as-a-service (SaaS) product using at least one major cloud technology. The ideal candidate would have done several such products using several cloud technologies (VMs/containers/cloud services). This role will guide the development, deployment and operation of core cloud technology used by major Service Provider (SP) and Enterprise customers all over the world. The emphasis of this role is to both do hands-on implementation and to influence and guide the platform development to be highly operable and efficient for both development of new features and core operations.

This is a senior technical role oriented more towards the actual implementation and operation of the product. The candidate is expected to have strong hands-on skills and will guide and contribute technically to the product. We play with the following technologies and expect this role to have experience working with each: AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Firebase, Auth0, jFrog, Artifactory, Terraform, TravisCI,

Requirements

We have a few core requirements, they are:

  • 6+ years relevant work experience building complex API-driven systems
  • Very strong understanding of cloud technologies - has deployed more than one solution on the cloud
  • Have a bachelors degree in Computer Science
  • Locally based or willing to relocate - in-house, local position

  • Distributed systems, ideally in a cloud environment
  • Kubernetes and container technologies
  • Docker, Terraform, Ansible, exposure to automation tooling (chef/puppet/salt/etc)
  • Understanding underlying internet protocols as they impact front end development choices
  • Networking and complex networked software systems

Even better if you:

  • Experienced in Agile environments - we use Scrum
  • Detail-oriented personality who does not lose sight of the big picture
  • Able to contribute beyond just coding (code reviews, demos, proof of concept solutions)
  • Entreprenuerial attitude and experience working for startups
  • Love learning and mentoring
