The Opportunity

his position works out of our Minnetonka, MN location in the Cardiac Rhythm Management division.

As a global leader in Cardiac Rhythm Technologies, we focus on innovative technologies that can improve the way doctors treat people with heart arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats.

The Senior CAD Designer functions, under limited supervision, to support engineers and technicians in the creation and revision of CAD models and/or detailed drawings for medical devices, fixtures, and tooling.

What You'll Work On

  • Generates 3D CAD models and detailed drawings of new and existing design concepts using SolidWorks.

  • Adheres to and applies ASME Y14.5-2009 dimensioning and tolerancing standards to detailed drawings.

  • Generates and/or modifies complex 3D models using advanced modeling techniques such as; multi-bodies, surfacing, 3D sketches, configurations, design tables, equations, master modeling, etc.

  • Designs injection molded components incorporating required draft, gate, ejection pin locations, textures, logos, etc.

  • Generates visualization assets (renderings or animations) from 3D CAD data.

  • Completes engineering change requests, updating all applicable documents to current Abbott MCAD standards.

  • Maintains CAD files and corresponding documents in Windchill PDMLink data management system.

  • Collaborates with engineers and technicians to conceptualize and develop new technologies.

  • Performs dimensioning and tolerance evaluations of assemblies, components and drawings.

  • Uses experimental, empirical, or numerical analysis to evaluate a designs form, fit, and function.

  • Performs virtual design validations of 3D CAD models to ensure model design integrity.

  • Provides solutions to moderately complex or infrequently occurring problems by using existing precedents or procedures.

  • Ensures requirements of the PDP process are followed as necessary.

  • Ensures that quality system requirements are being met.

  • Ensures a safe work environment consistent with OSHA requirements and Abbott Policies.

  • Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.

  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities, on occasion, as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU'LL BRING

  • Associates Degree in Engineering Technology or Industrial Arts OR an equivalent combination of education and work experience

  • Minimum 7 years in 2D and 3D drafting/CAD experience.

  • Five years of medical device industry experience with ISO/GMP's.

  • Must be expert SolidWorks user with rapid-prototyping experience.

  • Must be able to generate finished mechanical drawings suitable for release under the CO system, from sketches and solid models provided by engineers.

  • Ability to use MS Office tools such as MS Word and MS Excel to develop test procedures, specifications, or other documents is required.

  • Hands-on experience as either a machinist or mechanical technician to be able to assist in prototype and production assembly is a plus.

  • A strong understanding of GD&T (geometric dimensioning & tolerancing) required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Solidworks Associate (CSWA) or Professional (CSWP) certification, advanced SolidWorks certifications also a plus

  • Experience using Creo 3.0 or later and AutoCAD Mechanical 2017 or later

  • Broad technical knowledge; expertise in one or more relevant specialties (i.e. Electrophysiology, Cardiac Rhythm Management, Heart Failure, Vascular, or Neuromodulation)

  • Experience generating visualization assets (renderings or animations) from 3D CAD data. Knowledge of SolidWorks Visualize, Composer, Autodesk Maya, or Blender

  • Experience generating and importing anatomical models from CT Scan data or importing 3D scanned data into SolidWorks

The base pay for this position is $27.60 - $55.20 per hour. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
