ABB is seeking a Senior Electrical Design Engineer for Power Transformer Bushings that encompasses the design, research and analysis of parts, components, assemblies, subassemblies and systems, and the production of associated drawings and instructions.Under limited direction, perform a variety of complex engineering assignments requiring in-depth knowledge of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering first principles, plus a great length of understanding in medium to high voltage insulation applications and Design-for-Excellence techniques (Design-to-Cost, Design-to-Manufacturing, Design-to-Assy) to cost effectively and achieve robustness in design. Assignments typically require the use of advanced computation and innovative root cause analysis techniques. Proactively seek and implement initiatives to improve operations and increase customer satisfaction.

  • Remote work office location option may be available for candidates that meet or exceed established targeted Engineering Design skills/ qualifications for role.

Tasks:

Typical duties/responsibilities for engineering may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Design, analyze, and evaluate products or components, requiring a high degree of technical computation and design expertise in Electrical (primarily) and Mechanical Engineering (secondarily), with various activities in Product Care, Production Support and Research & Development focus.

  • Design and develop complex models or simulations and apply advanced computational analyses, programs, or analytical techniques to effectively meet requirements and resolve problems.

  • Act as principal investigator or lead a group of engineers investigating root cause of problems or field failures, developing solutions and preparing related recommendations and reports.

  • Conduct economic studies and prepare or lead the preparation of specifications, material and design selection, proposals for contracts, licensing and safety documents, and obtain required approvals.

  • Represent the group in meetings and conferences; interact with customers to resolve significant technical issues and develop related action plans.

  • As required, responsible for technical direction and minor administrative guidance of a small group of engineers and assistants.

  • Develop 2-D and 3-D models of components and assemblies for prototype, production and retrofit builds, using state of the art CAD (preferably Creo by PTC or equivalent) and PLM systems (preferably Windchill or equivalent).

  • Develop test plans for testing prototype and/or development units, analyze test failures and develop/implement design improvements based on test results.

Requirements:

Basic Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 8 years of design experience in a manufacturing environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering

  • Minimum 1,000 hours of working experience with Pro-E preferred OR Solidworks, Catia, or other similar modeling software or similar software package and Windchill data management.

  • Must demonstrate the ability to work within cross-functional global teams.

  • Experience developing electro-mechanical products (preferably with medium to high voltage power transformer bushings).

  • Excellent understanding of tolerance stack-up analysis, statistical and worst-case.

  • Excellent understanding of design robustness, Z-Scores, and Design-for-Excellence techniques (Design-to-Cost, Design-to-Manufacturing, Design-to-Assy)

All engineering support is to be done in compliance with all applicable electrical and building codes, customer requirements and company engineering/design standards. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Primary Duty * Develop and prepare detailed electrical engineering and construction installation documents and provide engineering support during the construction phase of projects to our project management and field installation employees. * Gathers and requests specific information from other design disciplines necessary to move forward and complete the electrical design on schedule. * Performs engineering calculations and studies for such items as power distribution system design, short circuit and coordination studies, lighting levels and coordination, etc. * Develop the electrical design so that it can be inputted into the CAD system or BIM model. Check all designs prepared by design team for quality and accuracy. * Prepares project design guidelines and scopes of work, specifications, cable pull schedules, reports and letters etc. * Responsible for providing required quantity of completed design documents to proper persons or inspection authorities. * Consults with vendors and reviews project shop drawings for design accuracy and contract requirements. * Works with project managers as need to develop engineered construction installation drawings from contract documents developed by outside firms. * Provides technical support to project managers, field personnel, estimators, and customers. * Develop conceptual designs, sketches or Value Engineering ideas to assist project managers or estimators in the preparation of an estimate. Training & Development * Review and update corporate engineering standards. * Identify trends, innovations, and changes in the industry and prepare the company in advance for timely implementation. Engineering Knowledge * Develop conceptual or detailed electrical designs in power distribution, lighting, low voltage systems instrumentation and controls for a variety of industries. (Commercial, Healthcare, Power, Industrial, and Tele/Data) * Apply thorough knowledge of the National Electrical Code and other applicable building codes to design projects. Department Leadership * Lead design teams of 1 to 8 engineers, designers and CAD/BIM technicians * Represent Sachs during design phase of project. * Meet with clients and A/E teams to develop the specific design requirements for an assigned project. * Diagnose issues, new developments and guide clients in the proper direction as to their specific needs. * Teach and Mentor design team members and peers in engineering calculations, the National Electrical Code and other building codes.
