Job Overview

TE Connectivity's Quality and Reliability Engineering Teams analyze the ability of product and production systems to comply with customer and contractual requirements through established reliability factors. They design, recommend revisions and install quality control systems, develop and document analytical methods for establishing reliability of products and their components and conduct analysis on relative reliability with regards to cost, structure, weight, maintainability, facility of production, and availability of materials and equipment. Out teams develop, implement and monitor company environmental safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health and safety regulations and recommend corrective actions if necessary. They are responsible for policies and practices to comply with applicable government regulations and industry requirements related to product environmental compliance, the implementation and management of technical and testing standards and specifications, quality control and reliability programs governing materials, product and processes, resulting in the optimization of material and labor, as well as failure analysis, root cause, corrective action and customer communication.

This person will also plan and conduct design assurance activities requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection and the substantial adaptation of standard mechanical/electrical engineering techniques, testing procedures and criteria; works closely with product development engineering to establish new approaches to problems as encountered. Additionally, this role will actively participate in design development ensuring design verification tests and validation activities related to new product development conform to established product requirements and sound testing principles. The Principal Design Assurance Engineer will support and work closely with Supplier Quality to develop and accept vendor Supplier Quality Plans for new and existing components. Other responsibilities including planning and coordinating detailed phases of Design Assurance for part of a major project or a total project of moderate scope, as well as routinely providing Design Assurance guidance and direction to engineers and/or technicians for the duration of a project assignment. Someone in this role will conduct Design Assurance engineering activities of significant scope or degree of difficulty (medium-large component/system/process associated with a medium to large project). Duties and Responsibilities Conducts Design Assurance engineering activities of significant scope or degree of difficulty (medium-large component/system/process associated with a medium to large project). Performs most assignments independently, with only general supervision/instruction as to expected results. * Reviews new product development and improvement project plans. * Reviews product risk analyses. * Reviews engineering requirement specifications. * Reviews product design documents. * Reviews product test plans and results. * Reviews product change requests. * Reviews product and process validation test plans. * Participates in critical component/process review. * Leads control plans implementation. Maintains communications within and outside of department in support of design assurance engineering activities, such as project management meetings, design reviews, etc. Actively participates in and contributes to the decision-making process; often conducts the meeting or presentation, and makes follow-up assignments for team members. * Interfaces with development, design, and manufacturing engineering areas to resolve quality and product issues. * Interfaces with Supplier on New Product Development and actively works with suppliers for component procurement and acceptance. * Generates periodic activity and project reports. Oversees preparation of documentation associated with design assurance engineering activities to include drawings/schematics verification/validation/capability testing, various new and revised operating procedures, risk analyses, etc. * Monitors new projects and interacts with other engineers to determine design criteria. * Writes test specifications and test methods. * In addition to assigned duties this position is required to assure compliance of Company operations to all applicable laws, regulations and standards, good business practices and company documented procedures (including but not limited to FDA, Quality Systems Regulations, ISO 13485, ISO 14001, government occupational health and environmental regulations and statutes). * Participates in and conducts Smiths Medical-facilitated training and development programs designed to increase knowledge in issues related to medical device manufacturing and development, such as GMP, Total Quality, Product Compliance/Certification etc., as well their application at Smiths Medical. * Generate documentation associated with verification/validation of equipment, products, and components. * This position is required to assure compliance of Company operations to all applicable laws, regulations and standards, good business practices and company documented procedures (including knowledge of all standards, government occupational health and environmental regulations and statutes related to the site). * Engage others, promote, and participate in Environmental, Health, and Safety initiatives, focusing on continuous improvement. Required Skills and Experience Technical Knowledge and Skills: * University Degree (BA degree) required. * Bachelor's degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or related engineering field, with seven to ten years' professional level experience within the medical, or a closely related industry is required. Specific experience in design assurance desirable. * Masters degree in engineering, with six to ten years of medical or closely related experience also meets requirements. * Ph.D. in engineering, with three to five years' medical or closely related experience also meets requirements. * Possesses and applies a comprehensive knowledge of mechanical engineering, as well as competency in related specialty fields (electrical engineering, etc.). Knowledge is evidenced by a cumulative GPA of 3.0, or above in engineering major, plus breadth of experience, previous job progression, accomplishments and performance levels. * Uses considerable judgment in the planning, scheduling and coordinating of project phases, as well as the selection of engineering techniques and criteria. * Knowledge of drafting including CAD design; ability to utilize electronic drafting aids (such as CAD programs) for mechanical design. Familiarity with interpreting electronic design documents, primarily schematics and PCB layout. * Knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC) and quality tools including sampling, tables, and CPK; ability to design and perform required tests using appropriate tools. * In depth knowledge of ISO 13485, ISO 14971, 21 CFR 820 Design Controls. * Depth of knowledge of applicable QSSOPs, regulations, and standards etc. with proven skill in integrating into mechanical engineering discipline. * Knowledge and skill in mechanical engineering documentation procedures, development methods and project management, with the ability to rapidly master Smiths Medical internal procedure and methods, such as Documentation System, ECOs, DOEs, DVTs, MDAs, etc. * Excellent verbal communication skills and technical writing skills. Able to plan and conduct effective meetings and group presentations. * Experience working with electromechanical products, related components and processes. * Experience working with sterile products, related components, processes and clean room environment. * Able to effectively utilize other resources when necessary to resolve issues, especially those outside expertise. * Demonstrated effective analytical and problem solving skills to identify root causes and probable solutions quickly. Applies to design and manufacturing environments, as well as meeting departmental goals. * Proven experience with documentation systems, testing and inspection procedures, validation and qualification expertise. Abilities: * Ability to provide basic on-the-job technical training to others in department; ability to clearly convey ideas and concepts. * Ability to forecast, coordinate and lead cross functional team projects as well as develop working schedules. * Demonstrated flexibility and resilience in the face of constraints, frustrations or adversity. * Established ability to work with vendors and engineering staff members (within and outside the unit) and Operations personnel in an effective and positive manner. * Ability to coordinate and lead project team activities in an effective and efficient manner.
