Position Summary:

Applies and integrates statistical, mathematical and predictive modeling to manage and manipulate complex, high volume measurement data from a variety of sources. Discovers information hidden in vast amounts of data; enables smarter decisions to deliver accurate and reliable measurement data. The primary focus will be in applying data mining techniques, conducting complex statistical analysis and building high-quality prediction systems integrated with our products. Leverages machine learning techniques to improve predictive analysis for identifying measurement issues for gas and liquid meters. This position will also be key in development of the department's skills and capabilities in data analytics.

This position handles complex responsibilities related to the primary focus of job area. Proficient in a range of processes or procedures within the area of responsibility. Works under minimal supervision. May act as an informal resource for less experienced employees. Resolves most questions and problems. Refers only the most complex issues to higher levels. Fully understands principles of technical field. Identifies key issues and patterns from partial or conflicting information. May adapt procedures, processes and techniques to meet more complex requirements of the position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop and integrate creative solutions for leveraging structured and unstructured data in support of department and cross-functional business objectives.

  • Develop custom data models and algorithms to apply to data sets.

  • Develop predictive modeling methods to increase and optimize measurement data quality.

  • Design, develop and implement data mining tools and analyses to sift through large amounts of data stored in a data warehouse or data mart to find relationships and patterns.

  • Extend company's data with Microsoft Azure tools including R or SAS.

  • Utilize and maintain business intelligence tools and applications to generate insights and provide recommendations to drive results.

  • Enhance data collection procedures to include relevant information for building analytic systems.

  • Coordinate with various functional teams to implement models and monitor outcomes.

  • Process, clean and verify the integrity of data used for analysis.

  • Conduct ad-hoc analysis and present results in a clear and compelling manner.

  • Create automated anomaly detection systems and develop methods to regularly track performance.

  • Train Measurement Analysts in data mining and analytics to enhance groups capabilities.

  • Resolve problems for internal and external customers using knowledge of data analytics principles.

  • Serve as a source of expertise on reporting systems and data sources.

  • Analyze performance metrics and assure metrics are visible and well understood.

  • Collaborate with department management and recommend specific actions in response to analysis.

  • Perform statistical or operational analyses on assigned projects in order to identify trends, variances and data gaps.

  • Identify appropriate statistical and modeling procedures, metrics, budgetary requirements and information requirements for company.

  • Take action in a self-directed manner to identify issues and make recommendations to department leadership.

  • Produce procedures to document data sources, analysis methods and protocols.

  • Follow-up on recommended action plans.

  • Lead or provide input to system and/or process design and configuration.

  • Solve problems and develop solutions that call for original approach based on thorough and comprehensive knowledge and expertise.

  • Synthesize data and analysis into high-level presentations for department or senior leadership.

  • Plan, prioritize, conduct and lead assignments.

  • Act as a resource for less experienced team members.

Minimum Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Math or related field.

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Math or related field preferred.

  • Five (5) years' practical experience with SAS/R, Python, ETL, data mining, statistical analysis and data analytics.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Experience using statistical computer languages (R, Python, SLQ, etc.) to manipulate data and draw insights from large data sets.

  • Experience working with and creating data architectures. Comprehensive knowledge of statistical techniques and concepts (regression, properties of distributions, statistical tests and proper usage, etc.) and experience with applications.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for coordinating across teams.

  • A drive to learn and master new technologies and techniques.

  • Experience querying databases and using statistical computer languages: R, Python, SLQ, etc.

  • Experience with Microsoft's data mining suite including Azure.

  • Ability to promote cooperation and commitment within a team to achieve goals and deliverables.

  • Ability to identify and implement improvements and innovations that increase efficiency and enhance work quality.

  • Ability to distill complex data into concise and easily understood concepts and recommendations.

  • Ability to distill data and analysis into high-level reports and summaries.

  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions.

  • Ability to handle confidential information and material with the highest degree of professional responsibility.

  • Comprehensive skills in computer applications, databases and reporting software: Data Mining Tools (e.g. Minitab, SAS, R, Azure), Business Objects, Crystal Reports, SQL, Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint).

  • Work independently; with guidance in only the most complex situations.

  • Ability to discern data inaccuracies through technical experience and knowledge.

  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills.

  • Demonstrate commitment to compliance with applicable laws and regulations, company's ethics code of conduct and other company policies and procedures.

  • Respect and follow safety policies and regulations; scan the environment for objects or people who may pose a safety risk; encourage others to utilize safe and healthy work practices.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sedentary to light work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

  • Ability to view computer screen, sit, stand or walk for long periods of time.

  • Ability to operate a computer, copy machine, fax machine, calculator, telephone and other miscellaneous office equipment.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to produce quality work in fast paced environment with high daily pressure to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to work non-standard work hours as needed or required to meet established deadlines.

  • Ability to work indoors, in an office environment, regardless of whether cubicle, open office or private office.

  • Ability to travel occasionally to work or field locations, and/or to attend meetings or training, including overnight stays.

  • Subject to normal office noise levels.

The successful candidate will oversee the workforce who perform Maintenance & Construction of Instrument and Electrical systems connected to Marathon Oil's Operations. This position will also supervise Measurement Technicians and associated contract workforce. The position requires a high degree of self-direction and motivation, excellent verbal/written communication skills, organization, computer proficiency, and the ability to work in a dynamic, team-oriented environment. * Primary safety leader for team, ensuring the team are also acting as in-field safety leaders. Work to create safety culture/values alignment with all contractors we utilize through the established contractor management process. * Supervises and directs all I&E Facility Specialists & Measurement Technicians and associated contractors performing assigned activities in the field. * Assists in planning and scheduling of all maintenance & construction activities. * Work closely with our planning and scheduling staff to develop weekly schedules. * Enforces all MOC safety and administrative policies, procedures, and contract agreements. * Understanding of facility processes and basic operation. * Works with the Maintenance & Construction teams on all capital and expense jobs to ensure all jobs will meet the required budgets and timelines. * Ensures all jobs are performed in accordance with MOC engineering specifications and management of change process. * Work with management to establish and maintain I&E goals and philosophies. * Work with management to establish and maintain measurement goals and philosophies. * Manage and develop strategy in regards to compliance with Marathon, State, and Federal measurement requirements and regulations (Witnessing, proving, calibration, etc.). * Ensure all measurement proving and sampling schedules are completed within budgets and timelines. * Participate in all engineering design reviews relating to measurement and I&E. * Working knowledge of 120vac -12vdc circuits, wiring methods, NEC, area classifications, and ability to troubleshoot wiring and power problems. * Ability to read and understand P&ID's, C&E's, wiring diagrams, user manuals, and troubleshooting guides. * Basic understanding of VFD's and motor controls. * Working knowledge of Emerson Control equipment (ROC 407, 107 & 800 user programs, FST, etc.). * Working knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot communications (Modbus, TCP/IP, Roc Plus, TF, etc.). * Working knowledge of field instrumentation devices and troubleshooting (Fisher, Rosemont, etc.). * Basic knowledge of RF communications and troubleshooting. * Understanding process safety systems and requirements.
