We have also built something even stronger and more valuable: an award-winning culture based on trust, ownership, empathy, and collaboration. We value the unique experiences and perspectives that each person brings to The Trade Desk, and we are committed to fostering inclusive spaces where everyone can bring their authentic selves to work every day.

Do you have a passion for solving hard problems at scale? Are you eager to join a dynamic, globally- connected team where your contributions will make a meaningful difference in building a better media ecosystem? Come and see why Fortune magazine consistently ranks The Trade Desk among the best small- to medium-sized workplaces globally.

What we do:

Do you care about hot /cold aisle containment? We do too, and we are looking to add to our Data Center Engineering team just like we are continuing to add to The Trade Desk's colocation portfolio!

As a Senior Data Center Engineer, you are responsible for the reliability and efficiency of The Trade Desk systems, applications, and processes. You will actively participate in all aspects of building, managing, and improving our high-scale data centers. As our physical footprint continues to expand, we are excited for the DCENG team to follow suit.

As DCENG, we set the standard of data center/colocation deployments for the rest of the engineering organization and provide guidance on how to architect and maintain the now established physical infrastructure. Transformations are challenging and provide multiple opportunities for a positive impact on a growing company. If this sounds like an exciting pursuit, we'd love to talk to you!

What you'll do:

The Trade Desk infrastructure is "hybrid" both in operating system (Linux, Windows) and environment (bare metal, cloud). This position supports the fundamentals of the bare metal portion of our technology.

  • You will coordinate data center builds, expansions, and changes amongst multiple teams and vendors. Detailed and excellent communication skills are essential.

  • Provide solutions at scale for the physical infrastructure required to run a globally distributed system handling over 13 million requests per second.

  • Participate in root-cause analysis and postmortem discussions to effectively drive long-term operational health improvements.

  • Analyze for process gaps and implement solutions to speed up execution and reduce manual toil.

  • While this is not strictly a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) role, there are elements of the mindset that apply-- capacity modeling, monitoring, data collection and analysis, key performance indicator definitions, configuration management, and tracking outcomes.

  • Participate in "follow the sun" on-call rotation.

  • Occasional travel may be required.

We are a global team with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. To complement this team, you will welcome ideas that are different from your own and be well-versed in building from common ground to value, seek out, and foster invisible and visible dimensions of diversity.

Who you are: Our culture is much deeper than just having fun together (though we do that well, too). We take pride in our engineers being trust-builders, generous givers, scrappy problem solvers, and gritty pursuers of excellence. You do not have to meet all the requirements below, but we believe that people who meet most of them will have a higher likelihood of succeeding in this role:

  • You have data center experience. You are familiar with data center concepts like colocation space, power, cooling, cross-connects, structured cabling, and remote hands along with a strong experience in troubleshooting physical infrastructure problems and quickly determining a root cause.

  • You have at least 3 years of experience either in a direct role or via related functions such as a NOC or systems administration.

  • You think automation first. At our scale we are not interested in "boutique" manual management. While you may not have formal software engineering experience, you are capable of automating common aspects of data center and server management using tools such as Bash, Powershell, or Python.

  • You know servers. You are knowledgeable in a wide variety of typical hardware components and interoperability, such as storage, memory, processors, motherboards, chipsets, etc. Certifications with major server vendors such as Dell, HP, or Cisco is a nice plus.

  • You are organized. You will own overall server and parts inventory tracking, including the accuracy of metadata such as serial numbers, in-service dates, rack locations, power circuits, etc. You have experience with common tools such as JIRA, Confluence, git, or Excel.

  • You track the industry. You evaluate industry trends, vendors, and innovative technology. You recommend changes and improvements to our physical hardware footprint as appropriate.

  • You work with confidence and without ego. Our engineers have deep knowledge and exercise a high degree of leadership in their daily work.

You have strongly held, defensible ideas, and advocate for what you believe is right. You are also adept at identifying and evaluating trade-offs, willing to be proven wrong, and quick to walk through fire to support your fellow teammates. You often have strong opinions but weakly held.

  • You value, seek out, and foster diversity. We are a global team from many diverse backgrounds, with different experiences and perspectives. To complement this team, you will welcome ideas that are different from your own and be skilled at finding and building from common ground.

  • You are a creative thinker, not bound by "the way things have always been done". What you know is less important than how well you learn and innovate. We do not need engineers who know all the answers; we need engineers who can invent the answers no one has thought of yet, to the questions yet to be asked.

The Trade Desk does not accept unsolicited resumes from search firm recruiters. Fees will not be paid in the event a candidate submitted by a recruiter without an agreement in place is hired; such resumes will be deemed the sole property of The Trade Desk.
