Summary of Job Duties:

Faculty in the Department of Epidemiology at the College of Public Health are seeking a full-time Senior Data Analyst to join a molecular cancer epidemiologic research group. The major responsibilities include providing programming and data analysis support for molecular epidemiologic studies. The candidate must have previous work experience in the field of molecular cancer epidemiology. This senior data analyst will gather and analyze omic-based data, write and run basic statistical programs, develop flowcharts and programming specifications, write programs in various computer languages including C/C++, and create written and graphical reports for presentations and manuscripts. These tasks may also involve machine learning, data mining and organization, spatial analysis, writing and reviewing R or Python code-based tools, and generating visualizations and reports.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree plus three (3) years of experience in computer science, bioinformatics, molecular cancer epidemiology experience, or related experience or

  • Bachelor's degree plus five (5) years of experience in computer science, bioinformatics, molecular cancer epidemiology experience, or related experience required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Data management with large, omic-based datasets

  • Manipulation of large datasets using data management and analytic programming using statistical software such as SAS, R, and SQL

  • Use of statistical tools to manipulate dates to create time-dependent analytical variables

  • Use of statistical techniques including univariate statistics, comparisons, and regression modeling

  • Application, calculation, and interpretation of descriptive and inferential data.

  • Excellent knowledge of SQL/PL SQL and store procedure program language and a good understanding of Oracle/Microsoft SQL Server database systems.

  • Proficiency in C/C++, visual basic, and html.

  • Manipulation of large datasets using statistical programming or advanced data management software, such as R, SAS, and SQL.

  • Use of Microsoft Office reporting products such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access.

  • Knowledge and use of national data sources (e.g., TCGA, ACS, HCUP, MEPS).

  • Application development experience with the Microsoft .NET framework.

Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the group team lead in the collection and compilation of quality data for assigned registry, database, or indicator set.

  • Assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in maintaining data from ongoing population-based projects in an external or internally built database and ensure all data is entered accurately and according to specifications.

  • Supervises the development of any additional internal database including the composition of, and adherence to, the associated specification documents.

  • Conduct ongoing data analysis and evaluation to identify biomarkers and other factors associated with cancer risk, progression, and survival.

  • Utilize visual graphical tools and data displays to provide interpretation ease and meaningful conclusions and employ more advanced statistical tools and analysis, when appropriate.

  • Design and implement formal quality assurance processes to assure data accuracy and develop action plans for any data quality issues.

  • Collaborate with research and analytic team as well as across teams on translating research and analytic questions into initial analytic plans based on research and analytic questions.

  • Work with the PI to create written data analytic plans with detailed data management procedures to transform molecular epidemiologic data into research-ready analytic datasets.

  • Draft methodological sections of technical reports following accepted protocols.

  • Maintain detailed programming documentation for all projects, including annotated program code, dataset codebooks, and statistical output.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
