Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Senior Cybersecurity Researcher to work in our Cybersecurity Research and Development department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our UB facility with every other Friday off. You will report to the manager over Cybersecurity R&&D.

Theorizes, organizes and participates in the conceptualization and development of custom code used to identify and verify vulnerabilities, develops attack and defense methodology and code on high-risk computer networks within Operational Technology (OT) environments.

Responsibilities Include:

Supervise and train junior researchers in developing technical solutions for information operations and analysis related to national security topics including intrusion analysis, systems and vulnerabilities, network security, advanced analytic tools and data visualization techniques and other areas.

  • Develop concepts, algorithms and methods for detecting and preventing cyber attacks against OT system(s).

  • Develop and maintain code used to find weaknesses in systems or to verify relevant patch effectiveness.

  • Conduct penetration testing and vulnerability assessments.

  • Perform advanced cybersecurity analysis and reverse engineering of various types of computer code to identify suspect source code.

  • Write scripts and develop software utilities to automate security analysis efforts.

  • Working with senior program/technical staff plans, conducts and manages assignments, reviews progress and evaluates results.

  • Provide direct mentoring, assistance and support to junior staff in their technical growth.

  • Work with customers independently or supervise teams to develop requirements, produce and test code, and provide necessary documentation.

  • Oversee and participate in project teams to produce proposals for new work including joint projects with industry.

  • Maintain awareness of potential sponsors and their current objectives and funding levels. Continually develop customer relationships and support customer requests with briefings and papers.

  • Author technical papers, reports and proposals for internal and external release and represents us by giving technical presentations in large public forums.

  • Participate in both National and International forums to develop significant new concepts or novel approaches to Cyber Security.

  • Set high-standards for safety, security, environmental compliance and Mission Delivery, and oversee successful program execution consistent with INL's standards and procedures to find and address risk (cost, schedule and quality).

Minimum Requirements:

  • Level 1 - 460 - BS plus 5 years, MS plus 2 years, or Ph.D. plus 2 years experience

  • Level 2 - 470 - BS plus 9 years, MS plus 6 years, or Ph.D. plus 4 years experience

  • Programming skills with an ability to code in binary and assembly as necessary.

  • Linux, Solaris, and Windows based operating systems and development tool sets.

  • Strong background in searching and sorting algorithms, decision trees, and/or memory management.

  • Familiarity with Zero Day exploits. Familiarity with packet level programming. Strong personal (hobby) interest in computers and programming as well as academic training.

  • Design and creation of AI algorithms capable of learning and making predictions that define machine learning (ML).

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance and special access, which requires US Citizenship.

Job Information:

  • 460 - ($109,260 - $223,908) Or 470 - ($130,980 - $268,680). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
