Under direction, schedules, lays out, and participates in the work of personnel engaged in the operation of the Municipal Utilities and Engineering Department Water Distribution Division and provides support and assistance to the Water Distribution Supervisor. May exercise functional and technical leadership over lower level employees.

Participates in the selection and training of distribution system operation personnel;
Participates in the establishment of performance requirements and personal development targets for assigned personnel;
Provides technical assistance and advice to assigned personnel;
Provides for the training of assigned personnel in proper and safe procedures and practices;
Responds to inquiries and complaints;
Responds to emergency situations as necessary;
Ensures safety practices in work methods and procedures;
Maintains a variety of records, logs and reports;
Provides assistance with reading water meters on assigned routes;
Records readings visually or with computerized meter reading devises;
Performs minor maintenance on meters and water meter boxes as necessary;
Reports consumer complaints and issues work orders for malfunctioning meters, services, and main leaks;
Performs special meter reads;
Checks malfunctioning meters;
Investigates water pressure issues;
Notifies customers of upcoming meter shut off for non-payment of bill;
Turns off and locks water service for non-payment of bills;
Inspects new meter installation for proper setting;
Verifies meter numbers and number of dials; and
Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Courses in water technology are highly desirable.
Licenses and Certificates
Possession and maintenance of a valid California driver's license
Possession and maintenance of a California State Water Resources Control Board Water Distribution Operator Grade III Certificate
Possession and maintenance of a California State Water Resources Control Board Water Treatment Operator Grade I Certificate.
Essential functions and duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:
Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift up to 75 lbs;
Exposure to heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confined work space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, and traffic hazards;
Ability to travel to different sites and locations.
