PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Independently performs analysis of moderate to complex commercial loan requests and borrower information including but not limited to financial analysis, operating performance, industry trends and economic conditions to make initial assessment of credit worthiness. Provides detailed analysis and comprehensive written summaries that support the credit risk assessment and identifies any deviations from the Commercial Loan Policy as appropriate. Participates with senior credit staff in the assignment of credit risk rating.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.Perform efficient and concise detailed analysis and quality underwriting loan proposals. Underwrite loans, renewals, extensions and modifications. Proactively and independently analyze and structure proposals and complete the underwriting and evaluation process. Identify loan structure alternatives and make recommendations on credit decisions. Ensure compliance with credit policy and underwriting requirements.

2.Conduct assessment of credit worthiness of borrower; review historical operating performance and research economic and market conditions as they relate to the borrower's company and industry. Research industry specific information from outside sources, which may include industry publications, area libraries, references from other banks, credit agencies, and internet searches and information sites.

3.Perform analysis of secondary sources of repayment such as collateral; assess the quality and source of collateral being pledged and apply an appropriate discount factor to determine an estimation of collateral marketability in a liquidation scenario.

4.Perform analysis of a guarantor's financial position and construct personal net cash flow through investigation of personal financial statements, personal tax returns and credit reporting documentation. Develop an understanding of any contingent liabilities and prepares summary.

5.Assist in the preparation of the initial assessment that summarizes key strengths and risks and includes identification of any deviations from the Bank's Commercial Loan policy.

6.Become familiar with alternative structures in order to reduce credit risk.

7.Assign a credit risk rating.

8.Prepare in-depth loan package with detailed analysis and recommendations for presentation to reviewers and/or Management Credit Committee. Attend Management Credit Committee to provide input on overall assessment and answer questions regarding their credit analysis as necessary.

9.Partner with lending team to conduct thorough annual reviews of current portfolio clients including review of financials, site visits, assessment of general business information and other factors that would be indicators of risk.



  1. Discuss and review covenants and overall assessments with reviewers and establish turnaround/delivery requirements. Participate in customer meetings to provide expert analytical counsel and credit perspective.

  2. Ensure that all work is in compliance with applicable laws, regulations and company guidelines as detailed in company policies. Seek guidance from senior credit staff as necessary and appropriate to resolve potential issues.

  3. Develop knowledge of Company and department systems, practices, and policies. Actively participate in training programs and opportunities to expand knowledge and analytical abilities.

  4. Participate in special projects and performs additional duties as required.

  5. Understands compliance with all regulations governing the banking industry, as well as agency guidelines and organization policies.

  6. Understands the compliance requirements to ensure files are maintained in accordance with regulations.


JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of commercial lending process including demonstrated credit evaluation and underwriting ability, with ability to make independent credit assessments.

  • Knowledge of credit approval policy and process with the ability to accurately interpret lending policy and apply same to the management of the portfolio.

  • Knowledge of qualitative portfolio analytics and metrics with the ability to utilize automated and analytical tools and techniques.

  • Ability to identify and quantify business risks and the key drivers of risk and focus decisions accordingly.

  • Ability to understanding client industry and its general fit to portfolio parameters.

  • Working knowledge of banking regulations and laws governing commercial lending.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate financial analysis detail in a clear, concise manner.

  • Strong organizational skills with ability to set priorities in a multi-task environment and meet deadlines.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office with specific capability in Word and Excel.

  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of credit and customer information.

Experience & Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or Economics, or equivalent related work experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in commercial credit lending environment with noted progressively responsible experience in credit evaluation, portfolio risk assessment and underwriting.

  • Internal contact with Lenders and Portfolio Manager.

  • External customer, prospect and referral source contacts.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

Office environment. Ability to operate computer. Ability to communicate in order to exchange simple to complex information with individuals and groups. Ability to travel throughout Bank footprint.

Duties and Responsibilities What you'll do as a Senior Credit Analyst: * Underwriting and Analysis: Underwrite high quality credit narratives in support of new and existing loans. This responsibility requires the following skills: * Spreading business financial statements and tax returns using Moody's software * Analyzing multi-year trends and ratios from financial information * Understanding cash flow from operations, which includes identifying recurring and non-recurring sources of cash flow * Researching industry trends and risks * Performing collateral analysis including accounts receivable, inventory, real estate and investments * Running credit reports and gathering/analyzing KYC information * Spreading personal financial statements and tax returns for individual guarantors, developing borrower and guarantor global cash flow analysis * Presenting to Executive Loan Committee with the Business Banker for loan approvals. * Loan Closing: Work closely with Business Bankers, Commercial Loan Operations, Outside Counsel and the client to document and close loans thoroughly and swiftly. This process includes: * Ordering loan documents, either in-house or using outside counsel * Reviewing documentation for consistency and accuracy with credit approvals * Ordering and reviewing formation documents & UCC searches for clients * Ensuring loan terms have been detailed accurately on the Bank's loan system, post-closing. * Portfolio Management: Create, maintain, and monitor all loan and credit files at the highest quality. This process involves: * Monitoring existing credit facilities for financial and reporting covenant compliance * Reviewing the covenant compliance log to ensure updated financial information and covenant compliance and communicating with clients to receive required reporting information * Detecting early warning signs that could lead to a potential default * Identifying defaults immediately to the Business Banker and Executive Loan Committee * Monitoring underperforming loans * Evaluating proper loan risk ratings * Corresponding with Executive Loan Committee and Credit on waivers, amendments, renewals, reviews and modifications * Client Service: Assist the Business Banker on all levels of the business banking relationship to ensure the client receives exceptional service. This process includes: * Receiving and funding loan advances and payments * Collecting loan and legal fees * Calling on delinquencies * Assisting clients with various loan and deposit related inquiries * Remedying or submitting client requests to the proper departments and following up to ensure timely execution * Identifying cross-sell opportunities. * Lead special projects as needed. * Be or become proficient in Microsoft Office, Bisys, AFS Level III, and Moody's. * Perform duties and responsibilities specific to department functions and activities. * Performs other duties and responsibilities as required or assigned by supervisor.
