VIEW JOBS 11/9/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-02-07T00:00 Founded by Dr. Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg in 2015, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) is a new kind of philanthropy that's leveraging technology to help solve some of the world's toughest challenges – from eradicating disease, to improving education, to reforming the criminal justice system. Across three core Initiative focus areas of Science, Education and Justice and Opportunity, we're pairing engineering with grantmaking, impact investing, policy work, and movement building, to help build an inclusive, just and healthy future for everyone. Our Values We believe we can help build a future for everyone. * We aim to be daring, but humble: We look for bold ideas — regardless of structure and stage — and help them scale by pairing engineers with subject matter experts to build tools that accelerate the pace of social progress. * We want to learn fast, but build for the long-term: We want to iterate fast and help bring new solutions to the table, but we also realize that important breakthroughs often take decades, or even centuries. * Stay close to the real problems: We engage directly in the communities we serve because no one understands our society's challenges like those who live them every day. Our success is dependent on building teams that include people from different backgrounds and experiences who can challenge each other's assumptions with fresh perspectives. To that end, we look for a diverse pool of applicants including those from historically marginalized groups — women, people with disabilities, people of color, formerly incarcerated people, people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or gender nonconforming, first and second generation immigrants, veterans, and people from different socioeconomic backgrounds. The Opportunity Our mission is to support science and technology that will help make it possible to cure, prevent, or manage all diseases by the end of the century. Interdisciplinary teams of physicians, biologists, computational scientists, and engineers can expand our understanding of the human body and illness — the very science behind medicine. CZI fosters collaboration between scientists and engineers, develops tools and technologies, and builds support for basic scientific research. Examples of the work CZI Science is supporting include the Human Cell Atlas, a global project to create a complete reference map of all the cells in the human body; and the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, an independent nonprofit research hub to bring scientists and engineers together from Stanford, UCSF, UC Berkeley, along with the engineering team from CZI. Our Computational Biology team is focused on computational approaches that make biology more robust, scalable, reusable, and open. By developing both tools and collaborative communities, we enable researchers to leverage these approaches. In this role, you'll analyze data and prototype computational tools in direct collaboration with labs. Then, you'll partner with software engineers to build production-ready versions of those tools, and support the scientific community to enable their broad usage. While you will begin focused on supporting one or two of these existing project areas, you will be encouraged to proactively explore novel computational approaches and identify problems in biology in need of computational expertise. As part of our small team, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to our strategy and help define new areas of investigation for the Science Initiative. You can learn more about our journey in science here. You will * Analyze biomedical data from our collaborating labs * Curate reference datasets and annotations * Build prototype tools for analysis, visualization, and data sharing * Survey the landscape of computational tools in genomics and microscopy * Document user experiences and specifying requirements * Support the planning and review of grants * Build and nurturing open communities and collaborations You have * PhD in a quantitative science field * 3+ years analyzing biological data * 3+ years programming with a modern scientific computing toolkit * Ability to build prototypes for analysis, visualization, data sharing, and work closely with collaborators to identify requirements and iterate solutions * Demonstration of engagement with open source and open science communities * Excellent written and verbal communication skills in scientific settings * Experience in multidisciplinary scientific collaborations * Experience working closely with both academics and software engineers * Willingness to travel frequently to work with collaborating labs * Significant research experience in biomedicine, genomics, and/or imaging * A record of involvement or engagement in open-source software communities * Previous involvement in data sharing or data curation efforts * A passion for open science Chan Zuckerberg Redwood City CA
