Job Description

Nevada State University invites applications for the position of Senior Communications Officer. The Senior Communications Officer will serve as the official spokesperson of the institution and serve as the primary speech writer for the President. The position will develop and implement external and internal communications for the Office of the President. Through speeches, reports, presentations, op-eds, web content, and collateral material, the Senior Communications Officer will translate complex concepts into powerful language for a wide range of audiences. Reporting to the Deputy Chief of Staff, the Senior Communications Officer will provide public relations support to the Office of the President and the institution and will exercise sound editorial judgment and maintain discretion. The person in this position will also work closely with the Chief of Staff and Strategy to ensure mutual alignment with institutional messages, themes, and priorities.

The Senior Communications Officer is responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with regional and national media, and promoting positive coverage of events, trends, and activities. The position provides communications and/or media counsel to Nevada State leadership. The position identifies and develops opportunities for earned media to advance Nevada State's reputation, promote public education and help constituent audiences understand the President's agenda and direction. The position promotes collaborative speaking engagements and media appearances and assists with legislative tracking and other government affairs efforts as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement communication strategies which integrate print and digital mediums across multiple platforms for the Office of the President.

  • Draft speeches, feature articles, talking points, presentation slide decks, briefing papers, opinion editorials, letters, emails, press releases, and website and social media content.

  • Edit and proofread all assigned projects.

  • Produce frequent communications for faculty, staff and students and external stakeholders.

  • Manage the public relations aspects of the position to include developing story ideas to pitch and place, and respond to issues.

  • Oversee and manage the Office of the President social media platforms and presence and website.

  • Liaising with key community partners.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, Communications or related field.

  • 5 years of experience.

  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (Nevada State does not sponsor employment-related visas).

Salary & Benefits

Budgeted salary for this position is $93,573.00. Nevada State University offers excellent benefits, including 17.50% retirement match, 24 annual leave days, beginning balance of 30 sick leave days, 12 paid holidays, educational benefits, and three health insurance plans that can be supplemented with flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts.
