On Microsoft's Corporate, External, and Legal Affairs (CELA) Public Affairs team, you'll join a group of communications professionals focused on telling the stories to demonstrate the company's commitment to building trust, and contributing to solving some of the world's big challenges The Public Affairs team is also part of the broader Microsoft Communications Group, so you'll join a large, diverse group of professionals focused on innovative communications and you'll have significant opportunities for career growth.

The Public Affairs communications team works on issues at the intersection of technology, public policy, and societal impact. We manage external communications on topics that drive daily news cycles and public discussion about the impact of technology around the world. We're a multi-disciplinary team with communications, marketing, and government affairs professionals.

We're looking for experienced corporate communications professionals with 8+ years' experience to manage communications for the following sets of issues central to the company's reputation. The ideal candidates will feel comfortable managing communications for high-stakes issues, familiar with technology, and working with public policy issues. There are three positions in total each covering different topics:

  • Online digital safety and data protection. Microsoft takes seriously its commitment to ensuring the safety of those who use our tools and services. You'll work across the company and with our Chief Digital Safety Officer to manage public communications for this important work including our technology solutions, cross-industry coalitions, and public policy initiatives. The second area of responsibility is on data protection and our work to ensure customer data is protected by strong laws. You'll work closely with public policy and legal colleagues to help advocate for improvements to laws and regulations around the world to better protect customer data.

  • Microsoft Philanthropies and local engagement. You'll help develop and execute proactive external communications plans in support of our public policy and Microsoft Philanthropies initiatives in our home state of Washington including affordable housing and education. You'll also help lead communications for Microsoft's TechSpark. TechSpark is a national civic program of Microsoft Philanthropies focused on introducing digital initiatives designed to foster greater economic opportunity and job creation in specific communities across the United States.

  • Legal Affairs Communications. You'll manage communications on a wide range of high-profile legal issues, working closely with senior leaders on the legal team. You'll provide comms counsel, develop proactive plans and manage reactive issues on a wide range of high profile legal issues that are central to the success of the company.

You'll be working cross company, with our customers, partners, policymakers, and organizations around the world to advance this effort. You will tell stories, lead communications moments and announcements, manage reputation impacting reactive issues, and engage reporters.

The role may be based at Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Washington or at Microsoft offices in Washington DC, New York City and San Francisco.

Required Qualifications

  • 8 or more years of experience in policy, corporate, or issues related communications

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent work experience

  • Exceptional communications skills

  • Ability to manage complex issues in an incredibly fast-changing environment

  • Understanding of evolving communications trends

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team and across complex cross-group organizations

  • Proven track record for new, innovative earned media approaches and smart risk taking

  • Experience in driving proactive and impactful communications campaigns and media relations

You are on top of data protection trends around the world and understand their importance to the company and its users.
