The Senior Communications and Outreach Specialist assigned to the Wright Center for Clinical & Translational Research provides planning, developing and executing a comprehensive outreach and engagement strategy that support the research mission, visibility and goals of the Wright Center. This position includes all aspects of investigator outreach, communication, and engagement; and promotes the work and outcomes of the Wright Center and its projects within the broader scientific community, policymakers, sponsors, the clinical and translational science community, university donors, the professional news media, and the general public. Partnering with VCU University Relations, will also serve as the Wright Center's communication representative for national and local multi-institutional collaborations and the national CTSA consortium.

Minimum Qualifications

?Bachelor's degree required in health, science or research communication related discipline or equivalent education, training, and experience. ?A minimum of three years relevant experience in research with emphasis on research communication and participant engagement. ?Demonstrated excellence in scientific writing; clearly, accurately, and engagingly conveying complex scientific, clinical and translational research in long and short form for a variety of audiences, including policy makers, investigators, and the scientific and participant communities across a variety of platforms. ?Extensive knowledge of scientific and research concepts, with thorough understanding of federal, state, and University regulations governing protection of human research subjects in the conduct of the research; sponsors policies on research dissemination; and University and sponsor policies for licensed and copyrighted discoveries and publications. ?Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills are essential. ?Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Manages the design and implementation of marketing initiatives, campaigns, and comprehensive communications that drive brand identity and positioning, facilitate growth, and position Owens & Minor as an employer of choice for future talent. This role reports directly to a member of the Executive Leadership Team, playing an active role in company leadership and strategy. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. GROWTH: Plays a leading role in achieving Owens & Minor's revenue goals and driving new growth: a. Supports global sales and service initiatives geared toward revenue growth and market share gains through thought leadership, data analytics, and close collaboration with sales professionals. b. Develops plans, strategies, and initiatives to expand market share. Ensures the development of annual marketing plans for business units and divisions. c. Acts in a leadership capacity to identify growth opportunities (geographic/market expansion, new industry segments, adjacencies, new offerings, etc.). d. Helps lead the annual strategic planning process for the company. e. Owns the global marketing, communications, and brand experience budgets on an aggregated basis. 2. CAPABILITIES: Builds out Owens & Minor's global marketing organization. a. Structure: Creates and executes plans to develop an organizational that includes: i. Creative Services (design, copywriting, content, digital user experience, etc.) ii. Strategic Marketing (company as well as division level) iii. Analytics, Customer Insight, Data Analytics iv. Digital Marketing, eBusiness, Digital Transformation v. Brand/Experience management (employee and external facing) vi. Marketing Operations vii. Public Relations, Investor Relations, Corporate Communications viii. Account-Based Marketing ix. Commercial Enablement, Sales Support x. Events management b. People: Develops near and long-term organizational structure to deliver objectives. Assesses existing talent to ensure current teammates are appropriately placed. Hires talent into approved new roles, continuously evaluates and improves talent pool, and ensures a reliable stable of external resources (copywriting, design, etc.) to cover spikes in demand/workflow. c. Processes: Establishes departmental operating processes and metrics to enable development of an Agile Marketing function. Monitors metrics and drives continuous improvement, efficiency, and productivity. d. Technology/Tools/Infrastructure: Determines technology be needed as the marketing organization scales to full capabilities. Evaluates existing tools (Salesforce, etc.) to mitigate redundancies in newly acquired tools and technology. Makes formal proposals for needed investments, oversees implementations of new tools and technology, and ensures relevant teammates receive training. 3. CUSTOMER CENTRICITY: Ensures the Marketing team collectively fills the role of "customer champion" for Owens & Minor's global organization: a. Establishes capabilities and processes to collect, analyze and share implications of market and customer insights (including Voice of the Customer). Monitors and reports market, customer, industry, technology, healthcare, patient trends. Develops implications and recommended actions that the company needs to take to respond to and/or capitalize on trends. b. Establishes methodology to measure customer satisfaction trends, regularly reporting and putting in place improvement plans and initiatives. c. Drives customer understanding across relevant parts of the company (sales, product management, customer service / CEC, etc.). d. Utilizes customer insights to develop marketing plans, initiatives, strategies, content, etc. e. Harnesses both external and internal data (transactional, customer feedback, etc.) to create competitive advantage. 4. BRAND MANAGEMENT: Drives Owens & Minor brands' relevance, consistency, engagement and persuasion across customer, supplier, teammate and prospective teammate audiences: a. Company Brand (customer-facing) : Develops brand platform, mission, vision, values, value proposition, support points/reasons to believe, brand tone and personality, tagline, messaging and creative design. Ensures company-wide compliance with brand standards. b. Divisional/Product/Services Brands : Establishes positioning, value propositions, support points/reasons to believe, messaging, and creative content. Ensures relevance is monitored and maintained, particularly relevant to market dynamics changes. c. Employer Brand: i. Teammate-Facing: Partners with Human Resources to maximize teammate engagement. Assists with measuring teammate engagement and satisfaction, reporting out results and developing improvement plans. Establishes capability to manage "employer brand" initiatives. Partners with Human Resources and other functions to ensure steady flow of teammate-facing content, news, announcements. Ensures messaging reaches all teammates by expanding outreach tactics beyond email and homepage posts. ii. Prospective Teammate-Facing: Partners with Human Resources to create an "employer of choice" brand positioning that drives recruiting success. Ensures availability of tailored, persuasive content/messaging to appeal to the variety of candidate personas. SUPPLEMENTAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. Performs additional duties as directed. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: * Master's Degree in Marketing, Communications or related function preferred * 10 or more years of Senior/Executive level marketing experience, preferably within the Healthcare Industry * Business to Business (B2B) Marketing experience in industries involving contract-based customer relationships, preferably in businesses involving complex portfolios of products and services * Global business experience highly preferred * Prior experience building teams from start to full scale * History of digital transformation success * Demonstrated success of partnering closely with Commercial, Product Management, and IT teams KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES: * Excellent written and verbal communication skills * Excellent planning and organizational skills * Excellent project management skills * Outstanding and persuasive presentation skills * Ability to lead, provide guidance and supervision to others, and act decisively * Ability to influence across functions * Strategic thinking OTHER REQUIREMENTS: * None #LI-SH Note: Owens & Minor is not accepting unsolicited assistance from search firms for this employment opportunity.
