We are looking for a Senior Communications Advisor to lead internal communications and employee engagement for Rio Tinto Kennecott's operations. In this role, you will interact with operational leaders and key stakeholders across Kennecott and have the opportunity to create significant impact on the employee experience and future of Kennecott. This is a permanent, full-time role required to be onsite.

This role reports to the Principal Advisor, Communications & Special Projects and is part of the Kennecott Communications team. While your role will focus on the Kennecott asset, you will be part of a global communications team within the Copper product group.

In this role, you will:

  • Serve as the communications business partner for the Metals General Manager, supporting employee engagement and employee communications, acting as a communication consultant and advisor to operational leadership teams

  • Lead the development and implementation of employee communications strategies and plans for Kennecott's operations including the smelter, refinery and rail, while also supporting general Kennecott communication needs.

  • Counsel and guide leaders in communicating to site employees while identifying and escalating potential issues and managing risks appropriately by understanding and anticipating communication and change management risks and take action to address as appropriate

  • Actively engage with frontline employees and supervisors in the field and observe communication plan implementation - collect feedback and continuously improve communications based on findings by being onsite at least 4-5 days or in the field at the smelter, refinery or rail

  • Develop rich, relevant content and innovative ideas that is simple, effective and reaches our frontline employees while experimenting with new, creative ways and processes to reach employees with the information they care about

  • Manage and oversee content across operations and ensure information is relevant, timely and effective and monitor, report and evaluate communications impact/reach against key business priorities

  • Ensure all site communications aligns with broader Kennecott and Copper Communications priorities and strategies

  • Coordinate and support site tours and events as needed

  • Keeps abreast of Rio Tinto brand standards and guidelines as well as central resource tools and templates, use in work activities and promotes its use within the company

What you'll bring

  • A strong background and keen interest in internal employee communications and an experience communicating to a frontline (offline) workforce

  • Experience working in an operations environment and collaborating with other corporate affairs disciplines including media relations, social media and branding teams

  • Proven experience in communications, public relations or a closely related field

  • Clear and applied understanding of public company communications and reputation management

  • Well-developed writing skills and a good understanding of how to adapt writing and content for various channels and audiences

  • Ability to transform technical information into engaging content and proficiency in developing messaging to manage complex and sensitive issues

  • Ability to prioritize and balance needs of multiple stakeholders

  • Strong communication / interpersonal skills to influence stakeholders and build effective partnerships

  • A team-oriented individual with a positive attitude, pro-active, results-driven, innovative and collaborative approach, with experience in working in a complex organization or multinational business is desirable

  • Degree in Bachelor of Communications or related discipline

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903, and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
