Senior Commercial Lines Underwriter - Small Commercial (Hybrid / New Hartford, NY)

What you will do

The Senior Commercial Lines Underwriter is responsible for managing a profitable portfolio of commercial insurance policies. They will be responsible for underwriting risks, both new and renewal business, in accordance with established guidelines and their assigned authority levels. The successful candidate will possess strong analytical skills, sound judgment, and expert knowledge of insurance regulations and industry best practices.

• Receive, review, and grant approval/issue rejection notices for risks with granted authority

• Thoroughly review and document risks outside of granted authority for referral to Supervising Underwriter.

• Order and analyze investigation reports on present or potential insureds, using the reports to support underwriting decisions, as appropriate.

• Receive, review, and approve/reject requests for endorsements to policies

• Interpret available data and information to price policies within company guidelines

• Build relationships with current agents/agencies, while cultivating potential opportunities/ submissions through proactive call-outs.

• Communicate with agents and other company personnel about insureds, potential insureds policy endorsements, and coverages.

• Keep current on agent's/producer/s loss ratio and volume, manual changes (rules, classifications, and rate changes), various restricted lists, and changes in company underwriting procedures.

• Prepare written instruction for various processing units regarding endorsements

• Review claim files in order to determine desirability of risk and/or risk classification information.

• Revise expiring policy files in order to determine desirability for renewal.

• Achieve individual performance metrics in areas such as:

• Agent call-outs

• Written premium

• Loss Ratio

• All other metrics, as assigned

• Demonstrates proficient knowledge of forms, coverages, ratings in order to properly review policies.

Additional Responsibilities

• May communicate Utica's underwriting appetite and guidelines through interactions with agent/customers, including through agency travel with marketing representative or leaders. Occasional independent visits.

• May handle high-volume agents and large, complex accounts, with guidance.

• Helps to train/mentor Commercial Lines Underwriters.

• Performs other duties as assigned

• Conforms with all corporate policies and procedures

What you will need

• 3+ years of Commercial Lines Underwriting experience

• IIA General Insurance and/or IIA

• Underwriting series and/or CPCU coursework preferred

• Bachelor's Degree preferred or equivalent business experience

Candidates that don't meet the above experience/education, may be considered as a Commercial Lines Underwriter.

Salary:

Senior Commercial Lines Underwriter

$67,300 - $100,900

Commercial Lines Underwriter

$56,600 - $84,900

This position is bonus eligible.

The final salary to be paid and position within the internal salary range will take into consideration the individual's work experience, geographic location, education, certification(s) or additional qualifications, and scope and responsibilities within the role.
