You will provide enterprise public cloud services direction and delivery for one of the largest healthcare companies in the US. You will work closely with various areas of the organization to define, architect and enable the delivery of cloud capabilities and solutions, focusing on infrastructure and platform as "as a service" (IaaS and PaaS) models across multiple cloud vendors and geographic locations. You will also be closely partnered with the HCA application teams and public cloud provider/s to help identify potential cloud workloads and how such applications can be deployed to public cloud technologies.

This role will be part of a team that is leading the Infrastructure as Code mindset and discipline to HCA's infrastructure organization. As a result, this requires walking the talk for the disciplined use of development and/or scripting, checking code into source control, testing and validating the automation, using the CI / CD toolchain and code quality tools, and educating others about this approach to enable public cloud use to scale at HCA.

The Cloud Architect will develop automated deployment and configuration of enterprise public cloud services. This work will focus on enabling an Infrastructure as Code mentality and enable the use of common design patterns for consistency, repeatability, instrumentation, and operational support. This requires close interaction with development teams, architects, and security teams to enable the safe use of public cloud services for the company. This position will leverage programming languages and/or scripting to maintain the automation and wrap discipline around the Infrastructure as Code approach for course control, versioning, and reuse.


  • Adopt and lead by example with the Infrastructure as Code mindset.

  • Develop automated tools/scripts to eliminate manual tasks. E.g., fully templatizing and

  • Automating infrastructure and application deployments.

  • Build out, optimize and operate our software defined networks in the public cloud (routers, load balancers, firewalls, DNS, VPN, etc.).

  • Configure and maintain logging, monitoring, and alerting tools in the Azure environments.

  • Perform testing and debugging of automated deployment and configuration software. Adhere to the CI / CD toolchain and processes to check code quality and vulnerabilities of the automation.

  • Create and run PowerShell and JSON deployments and troubleshoot deployments.

  • Work collaboratively with other Cloud Engineers, architects, and leads across IT&S and other disciplines to enable the enterprise use of cloud. This includes helping with proof of concept efforts with these teams, helping educate them, and advocating the safe use of public cloud services in line with HCA's guiding principles for public cloud.

  • Work with team to contribute, plan, and prioritize backlog of cloud design patterns and automation releases and updates that enable and support HCA's use of public cloud services.

  • Support customer issues on project work to ensure services are consistently and securely deployed. Work with support engineers, public cloud provider/s, developers, and off-shore resources to support escalated issues.

  • Be "on call" after regular shift based on pre-defined, rotating "on call" schedule to include potentially selected weekends and after hours weekday schedules

  • Create and document best practices and guidelines for developers and infrastructure engineers.

The individual will work closely with domain architects and infrastructure groups to define HCAs understanding of the public cloud, which includes identifying all aspects of infrastructure, middleware and application operating models, connectivity security and data protection. The individual must be a thought leader to enable forward thinking capabilities to ensure continued growth and success in emerging cloud technologies and methodologies. The position will interact daily with the multiple groups and individuals including; Security Architecture, Infrastructure Architecture, Enterprise Architecture, Application Architecture, Business Partners, Vendors and IT Leadership, as well as end users.

This role will help shape HCA's approach and vision to the public and hybrid cloud implementation providing technical leadership and architectural direction. The position requires excellent written and oral communications skills to develop presentations, technical white papers, and proposals.

7 years of experience is needed for a successful candidate.


Bachelor's degree Is preferred.


  • Core background and experience as an architect or senior engineer in infrastructure operations (7 years)

  • Experienced (2 years) in deploying and supporting critical applications to the public cloud in an architect or engineer role (manager or above) for a mid-sized organization or larger

  • Strong understanding and knowledge of core underlying technologies for public cloud including cloud API's.

  • Ability to take cloud concepts and educate other teams about their implementation. Collaboratively work with other teams and departments to show what is possible and correct false assumptions.


  • Knowledge and experience of Microsoft technologies

  • Cloud: Cloud Management Software, CMDB, Service Management software

  • Infrastructure services: Knowledge how infrastructure services are used to enable applications and interactions of the infrastructure stack to aid in design, deployment, and troubleshooting in an enterprise datacenter environment.

  • Security: General understanding of traffic flow of application and infrastructure services as they traverse firewalls, IPS, IDS, Active Directory, and other core services

  • Applications/software: Visual Studio, TFS / Git, PowerShell, C# or other development language a plus
