The Senior Architect, Cloud reports directly to the Director, Enterprise Architecture, Information Technology Service Management. The Senior Architect provides strategic leadership and oversight for the architecture, design and development of Cloud-based initiatives across AARP with a clear line of sight to business goals. The Senior Architect collaborates with teams across technology and business areas to align Cloud-based initiatives to business and technology architectures, frameworks and methodologies. Leads the development of standards, artifacts and tools and provides architecture oversight and governance. All of these responsibilities must be executed in a practical and effective manner that supports AARP's business goals and objectives.


Enterprise Architecture Responsibilities

  • Drives technology innovation that leverages Cloud (AWS)

  • Directs hands-on AWS Cloud-native architecture design participation on large, complex projects

  • Acts as the Senior Cloud (AWS) Architect in the AARP Cloud Center of Excellance

  • Provides oversight and governance of technology standards and frameworks for Cloud-based initiatives

  • Participates in development of Enterprise Architecture Standards and practices

Functional/Technical Responsibilities

  • Lead design and development of Cloud-based Proofs of Concept, feasibility studies, roadmap development and strategies

  • Provide leadership for Cloud-based technical design functions on assigned projects with varying size and complexity

  • Guide business/product owners with investment and budget decisions on all Cloud-based initiatives

  • Create and/or guide development of Project Architecture Document (PAD) for architecturally significant projects

  • Drive reuse of common services defined by the AARP Enterprise Architecture Principles and Frameworks

  • nfluence stakeholders across the organization at all levels to consensus in asserting Cloud-based architectures


Desired Education

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering or related field.

Required Competencies

  • 8+ years of overall technology design and delivery experience

  • At least 5 years of experience designing and delivering secure cloud solutions in AWS

  • At least 5 years of experience designing deployment strategies for cloud/virtualization and implementation best practices

  • At least 5 years of experience designing products and solutions using IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS

  • Experience in enterprise architecture practices, frameworks and methodologies

  • A demonstrated ability to work within a team and build consensus towards a technical direction

  • Strong technical expertise in executing proofs of concept and experimentation with development teams

  • Technology delivery experience through concept, development, validation, deployment, and support

  • Product evaluation through RFI/RFP including working with vendors and internal stakeholder groups

  • An understanding of external cloud hosting providers including Azure and Google

  • Soluton Architecture experience with projects using Agile and Iterative approach

  • Experience in deploying AWS products and solutions deployed in the non-profit industry

  • Development and/or systems administration experience with AWS products and solutions


  • Master's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering or MBA
  • AWS Solutions Architect Certification

Duties include: * Provide wide range direct support of the project team and DHS client to analyze project needs, business, technical, functional, performance and infrastructure requirements for application and data migration efforts. * Design system architectures to include the software, hardware, and networking components to support the total requirements and provides for present and future cross functional requirements and interfaces. * Prepare and present operational requirements document (ORD), designs, architectures, concept of operations (CONOPS), and transition plans for individual applications and data sets approved by client to migrate to Cloud services. * Develop and produce AWS Architecture drawings using tools such as Visio, PowerPoint or other tools, using AWS standard architecture principles. * Identify, evaluate and implement Cloud data analytics and data science off the shelf solutions that meet DHS client requirements. * Develop cost profiles based on well architected designs, using AWS cost tools. * Perform evaluation of system alternatives and assessment of risks and costs. * Provide in-depth domain expertise and promote AWS Cloud best practices to project technical staff and/or DHS client management. * Ensure that all data and Program processes are properly documented. * Work in a small agile team of Cloud engineers, architects, and security and project managers in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. Qualifications (minimum requirements, per the contract): * Active Top Secret security clearance with SCI eligibility * * BS degree in a computer or system science discipline from an accredited college or university and five (5) years to eight (8) years of progressive, relevant experience, or * any equivalent combination of education, experience, training and certifications. * * Demonstrated data analytic and data management skills * An understanding of Cloud Enterprise Data Management and Data Classification requirements, to include: Data Indexing, Data Governance, Data Minimization, Data Tagging, Data Retention, Unique Data Identification, Data Versioning * Experience performing Data Analytics with COTS and GOTS tools leveraging Enterprise Data Architecture * Deep understanding of Cloud Data Storage options and optimization * Ability to generate detailed Cloud Architecture documentation and data flows * Demonstrated experience working in various cloud environments (AWS, Azure, ICGC) Preferred Qualifications (desired but not required): * * AWS Solutions Architect certification * Project Management Professional * Security * Expertise in current Intelligence Community (IC) or DHS Cloud environments * Experience working in an Agile environment Essential Functions: Physical Requirements:Most work will be done at a desk or computer.
